How to Write a Book that Connects with Your Reader with Dr. Lanae St. John

Dr. Lanae St. John says authors connect with readers by doing inner work to find their authentic voice, then writing the way they actually speak. Use dictation tools like Dragon or your Mac's built-in function, and stop censoring yourself.

Are you writing a book but struggling to find your voice? Or maybe you're questioning your choices. In this Author Spotlight video you're going to meet an author who bravely wrote her book without the assistance of book launchers. I know, right? But she did a brilliant job of finding her voice in the process. If you want to learn how to find your voice when you're writing, this video is for you. Hey there. I'm Julie, the book broad from Book Launchers where your professional self publishing team helping you write, publish and promote a nonfiction book that grows your brand and builds your business and makes you money. Our superpower is caring more about you and your book than any other company as we support you to succeed. And the best part, you keep all rights and royalties and have full control. Now most of our clients come to us somewhere in the idea to bad first draft phase of the book process and we edit, polish, design and publish and and then work with the author to promote their book. Because so much of a book's success is determined well before you get to marketing. We rarely work with authors that have books that are almost done unless the author is open to my team making changes. But one book came to us pretty close to done and the book was so special we said yes, we'll help you promote this book. And that was. Read Me a Parental Primer for the talk by Dr. Linnae St. John. Lenae wrote this book for parents who wanna handle those tough questions that come from their kids who with comfort and confidence or really for anyone who grew up with unhealthy messages about sex. As the mom of a three year old, I've already been following her advice because so much of creating a healthy relationship with your body and open lines of communication begin with kids when they're really young. And frankly, I expect to consult her book for many, many years to come. One of the things Lynae did really well is capture her voice in this book. Like when you finish this book you feel like she's a dear friend you can call up for advice and and at the same time you're going to ask her about her daughters because you feel like you know them so well. So I asked Lynae if she would share what she thinks she did well to allow this first time author to capture her voice and leave the reader feeling like you know her so well when you're done reading her book.
Hi, I'm Lynae St. John the Mama Sutra and I wrote the book Read A Parental Primer for the Talk. Do the inner work first so all of those sort of archaic belief systems that we have, all they do is disconnect us from other people. And so doing that work to become more open and aware and conscious kind of gives you a different perspective, gives you kind of a fresh set of eyes. And then just write like you talk. I just did drag and dictate or double clicking the function key on my Mac. That'll just write it like I talk, which isn't always perfect, but that's what editors are for, right?
I think what Lynae is saying here is really important. The inner work she mentions will help you write a book that's more connected to your reader because you are more connected to yourself. There are lots of ways to do inner work, and everyone really has a different approach to it. My personal favorite and my generally recommended person for people to work with is Philip McKernan. Working with him absolutely changed my life and my husband's life and really got me to speak what's true for me. But for you, you really just have to figure out what you need and connect with someone that can help you do that inner work that Lynae talks about, because it will help you be a better writer. Knowing who you are at your core, what you stand for, what's important to you, will give you the confidence you need to be. Be yourself and say what's true. And everyone connects so much better to someone who is speaking their truth. It's a simple tip, but it's definitely more in depth than just being yourself. Because if you're trying to pretend to be something you're not in your book, your book will fall flat. If you're censoring yourself out of fear of judgment, your book's gonna lack the necessary emotion that it needs to connect with your reader. This is so important for every book, but especially books where you're trying to have an impact. So I'm really glad Linnae gave you this piece of advice and I love that that she mentioned that she talked out her book. I've said this many times, you don't have to sit at a keyboard and type to write your book. And her book is a great example of one that was written initially with the software on her Mac and Dragon dictation and turned into a great written product. So to wrap things up, I asked Lenae if she had any other advice for first time authors working on their book.
I don't intend for this to be a plug for book launchers, but it is a plug for book launchers because initially I was doing everything on my own. And once I got on board with book launchers, there were a lot of things that they helped me with. So I really wish I would have gotten started with book launchers earlier in the game.
Aw shucks. And thank you Lenae. And you know what? She's right. So many authors would save money by working with us because they get trained and ready to go experts at the right time. They have less things to redo because of mistakes they just didn't know any better about. And we take a lot of the stress and hassle off the process versus trying to figure it all out on your own. You want to learn more? I'll put Linnae's links down below, but you can find her@mamasutra.net and hemasutra on all social media. Thank you so much. Lynae. Check out her book.
