Non-Fiction Book Writing - What Content Should You Put In Your Book?

A short YouTube video (excerpt) by Julie Broad of Book Launchers giving practical advice on what to include in a nonfiction book. She emphasizes centering decisions on the reader’s needs ("the book isn't for you, it's for your reader"), using an outside perspective for feedback, and filtering content by whether it supports the book’s hook and promise. The clip also promotes her book Self Publish and Succeed and invites viewer engagement (comments, reviews, subscriptions).

Do you have a story or two that you want to put in your book, but you're not sure if you should include it? If you have content that isn't directly relevant to your subject and you're wondering what should go in your book or what should go in the bin, then this video is for you. Hey there, I'm Julie the book broad from Book Launchers. We're your professional self publishing services team helping you write, publish and promote a nonfiction book that will help you have a huge impact on your readers and and done right will help you grow your brand, build your business and make you money. The best part? You keep all rights and royalties. The decision around what goes in your book and what goes in the electronic trash bin isn't always that easy to make. You likely have an attachment to your material. It can be hard to see how much of it you should include in your book. How much detail should you go into? There isn't a simple formula to give you the answer, but it does come down to this. What does the reader need to know? The book isn't for you, it's for your reader. Many people treat writing a book like therapy, and the reality is that it is therapeutic to write down your story. It's also true that nobody, not even your best friend or your own mother, wants every detail. Defining moments in your life were hard. They shaped who you are. Those moments are important to share. However, readers only need the essential information to learn the lessons relevant for them. Robin Sharma, the best selling Canadian author, addresses this beauty beautifully. Leave your ego at the door every morning and just do some truly great work, he says. Few things will make you feel better than a job brilliantly done. Focus on whom you're helping with your book and why. Then get someone with an outside perspective who understands your goals to read your book. Notice the important words in what I just said. Outside perspective. Your spouse, your brother, your friend, or even your cousin all know you and they will likely find your stories more interesting because of that. They're also quite possibly going to be kinder than they should about your work. The truth is that the input you need for your book will probably hurt a little. It reminds me when my writing coach said that was a great story, but why did you make me read it? It was a good story, but it didn't serve a purpose for my reader, nor did it align with the hook or the promise of my book. Remember, it's not about whether something is interesting, useful, or even entertaining. Run every decision of whether to bin it, throw out, or book it keep something through this simple filter. Does this support the hook of my book? Is this something that needs to be shared in order to achieve the promise of the book? And who benefits the most from this section? If the answer isn't the reader, you know where to put it. If you're really not sure, that's where a great book writing coach comes in. And that is what we talk about in great detail in the next part of chapter eight in my latest book, Self Publish and Succeed. And this was an excerpt from that book. Have you got your copy yet?
