The 5 Biggest Mistakes Authors Will Make in 2026

In this solo presentation, Julie the Book Broad, founder of Book Launchers, warns nonfiction authors about five critical pitfalls that can doom a book’s visibility and revenue in 2026. She explains why relying solely on Amazon is fatal, how AI has raised the quality bar making generic, AI‑style books invisible, the necessity of pairing a book with a clear business model and revenue streams, the importance of building an AI‑recognizable digital footprint that demonstrates authority across platforms, and the danger of chasing shiny shortcuts and scams. For each mistake she offers concrete strategies: diversify traffic sources beyond Amazon, leverage lived experience to differentiate from AI‑generated content, treat the book as an asset with offers like consulting or workshops, cultivate media appearances, podcasts, and authoritative web content, and stay skeptical of unsolicited offers. Julie promotes Book Launchers workshops and the free Author Lab community as resources to help authors avoid these errors and thrive.

If you think publishing Your book in 2026 is as simple as uploading to Amazon, sprinkling in a few keywords, and praying the algorithm fairies, bless you. I've got bad news. If you want your book to survive the next 12 months, let alone succeed, you need to avoid the five brutal mistakes authors keep making. Because if you don't, your book becomes invisible and invisibility is expensive. So if you want to know what these mistakes are and how to sidestep them, this video is for you. Hi, I'm Julie the Book Broad, founder of Book Launchers and your host here at Book Launchers tv. Book Launchers is your first choice for all things related to writing, publishing, and promoting a nonfiction book. All right, let's talk about the mistakes that are destroying Author Careers in 2026 and how to make sure your career is not one of them. Mistake number one, betting your entire book future on one channel. This is the one channel Author wipeout year. Many authors are still doing the same thing they've done for a decade. Upload their book to Amazon, tweak the metadata, run some ads, and wait. Well, actually, some people aren't even doing that much. But the people who are aware that uploading to Amazon is not a marketing strategy, they are doing those things. And a lot of people have come to realize that being an author is more than just having a book on Amazon. But many authors still haven't quite realized that success on Amazon is actually as a result of success all around and outside Amazon. A focus on Amazon in 2026 isn't just ineffective, it's fatal. Amazon's latest algorithm update dramatically shifted how the platform recommends books. Current analysis shows that Amazon is rewarding listings that have received consistent high converting traffic from outside Amazon. Why? Well, Amazon wants proof your book is credible before they help you. They're looking for a variety of sources before they determine they're going to show your book to readers. They want to see social newsletter media, podcasts, YouTube, even blogs. And yes, of course, your website sending traffic to Amazon. And that traffic converts. If your Amazon strategy is keywords and ads, that's the equivalent of putting a flashlight on a rock and calling that a lighthouse. But here's the kicker. Amazon ads can't save a weak digital footprint. That's why this is so important. If your book is not converting without ads, ads aren't going to fix it. Running ads when your book isn't selling without them is like flushing money down the toilet. Now, adding ads to your strategy when the book is selling, that is Fuel on a fire. That's why one channel authors are being wiped out. You need an ecosystem sending a lot of different traffic that converts to Amazon. Mistake number two, believing that AI lowers the bar, when in fact it has raised the bar. Some people think AI has made becoming an author and easier. Well, it has made typing easier, brainstorming easier, getting research, even opinions and ideas for your book. All of that is easier thanks to AI but writing a truly great book, well, the ease with which thousands and thousands of books can be pumped out, regurgitating knowledge that has already been placed in the world. Those books are getting published at such a rapid rate. Companies like Draft 2 Digital have changed their content guidelines and basically said there's restrictions on a lot of categories. And if you're publishing nonfiction, expect to prove that you have the credentials to talk about your topic. AI didn't make authorship easier. It raised the bar so high that mediocre. Mediocrity. Mediocrity. It raised the bar so high that mediocrity means you're going to struggle. In early 2024, Reuters reported a measurable surge in AI generated books flow Amazon, many of them lower quality, generic, and plagued by readers as AI this tsunami of same sounding content means your book must do one thing AI cannot show. Your lived experience, your perspective, your stories and your human lens when you do that. I mean, that's what Judy Haller did. When you look at her book, you have no doubt AI did not write this book. It is Judy loud and proud AI and she hit the USA Today bestseller list with it. Also, that's what Colleen Souza did with her living by the mantras. And that book has been selling like crazy. Just a couple months in, she's already got more than 100 five star reviews. The mistake authors make is writing a book the way AI would write it or even just with content AI could write. If you're writing a clean, a generic, a bloodless book and it reads like a Wikipedia remix, well, it's gonna get buried before readers even see it. You aren't competing with other authors necessarily. You're competing with the best trained models in the world. And you win with that unmistakable human aspect that only you can bring to it. And writing to connect and show readers who you are. Mistake number three, writing a book with no business model behind it. A lot of authors will put blood, sweat, money and hope into a book and then have no earthly idea what the book is supposed to do for their life or business. They are pursuing book sales without book strategy. And here's The Truth the Nonfiction Authors association reports that authors who rely on book sales alone will earn under $12,000 per year. But authors who pair their book with offers like speaking consulting, workshop services, software, they will earn six to seven times more. That is not a rounding error. That's strategy. Here's the mistake. Your book is an asset, and assets need a plan. You also need purpose, a place for readers to go next, a way to collect customer data, a revenue model so you can make money from it, a relationship strategy and a platform that supports the book. If you don't do that, you are leaving money, impact, leverage and meaning on the table. And that table? It's going to get cleared fast and piled up even faster by other books. By the way, this whole concept is why we have our Live in Person workshop happening in Las Vegas in March. Authorsempireworkshop.com we're going to help you plan your empire around your book. All right, Mistake number four Creating a digital footprint that AI doesn't recognize or cite or recommend. And some authors aren't even creating a digital footprint at all. And this is the mistake a lot of people aren't talking about. But this is shaping our future. ChatGPT Claude Gemini Perplexity they are now becoming the first layer of book discovery for many readers. And these systems, they don't guess, they don't take the best keywords. They evaluate and synthesize credibility, citations, media appearances, social presence, interviews, topic authority, consistency across platforms. Reviews Google's generative search experience. Their documentation spells this out. So clearly AI relies on high quality, authoritative web information to determine visibility. OpenAI and Anthropic both emphasize the same content with strong signals of experience, expertise, authority and trust is going to be surface and synthesized. More prominently, if AI can't verify your authority, it's not going to recommend you. And if AI doesn't recommend you, readers won't find you. That's why I say if you're not building authority across platforms and Amazon is not going to build it for you, your digital footprint is not optional. It's the entry fee. This means your marketing strategy needs to be as wide as it is deep. Podcast interviews, articles featured on Best Books to Read list, creating your own Best Books to Read lists, your own website, media mentions. These are all very, very important, as is crafting content that answers the very questions your reader will be asking their favorite tool. Mistake 5 Falling for good looking shortcuts and shiny lies the Scam Trap yeah, I'll keep this one brief because honestly, well, we've talked about it a lot here, and there's plenty of sites like Writers Beware and Ally that do a great job of uncovering them. But every day authors forward me new emails and a new one hits my inbox. And with all these AI systems, it's getting more sophisticated. Recently I've been getting a bunch of emails that make it sound like they read my book. They flatter me with specific details. They likely pulled that from reviews or the description. And then they say, well, it's a shame that more readers don't know about this fantastic book. And then, guess what? Their service will help your book deserves national media. Just send $5,000. We have a private community of elite reviewers. Just $300. A movie producer wants to adapt your book or might want to adapt your book for a small fee. Writer Beware has documentation exposing a lot of AI driven scams, impersonation, fraud, and marketing traps designed to flatter authors into spending money they will never, ever see again and they won't see a return on the real mistake is not necessarily the scams. The mistake is looking for shortcuts instead of strategy. If a stranger shows up in your inbox and it seems like a dream and they're asking for your credit card, they're not a messenger from the universe, they're a bot with a spreadsheet. Stay skeptical, stay smart, and be wary of unsolicited emails or direct messages on social media. Stay in control of your business. Authors who succeed in 2026 aren't lucky. They're strategic, they're visible, they're human. And they treat their book like the asset it is and build authority where readers and AI can find it.
