Short YouTube talk by Julie Broad arguing that poor book sales are often due to a weak hook, not marketing. She defines a hook as a single-sentence promise that answers “what's in it for me?” for the reader, gives examples (Mean People Suck; Rich Dad, Poor Dad), and closes with a call-to-action to join Book Launchers for help.

Do you have a book on the market that is not selling well? It might need different marketing, but it actually might need a better hook. A hook is that single sentence that makes your reader say, wait, what? Where's this been all my life? It answers one question. What's in it for me? Not me, the author. Me, the reader. Most nonfiction authors skip this part. They think a good story or information is enough. An incredible life story helps, but that is not what's going to make somebody buy and read the book. Readers don't need more information and they don't buy a good story. They buy transformation. They might find your story fascinating, but only if you can get them to buy the book. You have to stand out from that celebrity memoir they are eyeing before they buy your book over theirs. They buy emotion. They buy a promise of how their life is going to be better after this book. Michael Brenner. He learned this the hard way. His book started out as the Empathy formula. It sounded nice, but friends told him nobody who needs empathy is gonna buy the book. So he brought it to us at Book Launchers and we worked with him and we ended up retitling it. Mean People Suck. How Empathy Leads to Bigger Profits and a Better Life that made people stop scrolling. Same with Rich Dad, Poor Dad. I mean that subtitle, it sells you what the rich teach their kids about money that the poor and middle class do not. I mean, who doesn't want to know that secret? It's in impossible not to click on that. And that is what a hook does. It sells curiosity. It promises transformation, and it makes your marketing 10 times easier because people instantly get it. So if your book isn't selling, don't blame your ads. Blame your hook. Great hook, Great sales. Weak hook, weak results. It really is that simple. And if you don't know your hook yet, don't panic.
