The War of Art Book Review - New Year Goals

Julie Broad (havemoreinfluence.com) delivers a short New-Year video urging viewers to stop beating themselves up over unmet mundane goals and instead focus on one meaningful goal that scares and excites them. Drawing on Steven Pressfield’s concept of "resistance," she identifies common cloaked fears (busy-ness, critics, unsupportive friends/family) and prescribes strategies: recognize resistance, reconnect to the greater purpose (helping others), accept that risk is necessary for reward, and surround yourself with supportive people. She closes with a practical prompt: choose the scary/impactful goal for 2016 and offers help via her newsletter and direct email.

Happy New Year. Are you still beating yourself up over the goals that you set for 2015 that you didn't accomplish? Forget about it. You're wasting time and energy. Let's focus on what you need to do now. Hey there. I'm Julie Broad with havemoreinfluence.com first of all, if you set boring, mundane goals for yourself, like drop 10 pounds, clean the garage, of course you didn't get them done, because who really cares what. But if you set a goal that scared you, it excited you, and you didn't get it done, it was resistance. And that's what Steven Pressfield talks about. So clearly, when you put yourself out there, you try to help people and have an impact. You're standing out. And when you stand out, people will try to hammer you down. And that thought is scary. Now, if one of your goals in 2015 was like that and you didn't do it, it's okay. We're going to get through it now. So you do do it in 2016. All right, so first thing, fear. What exactly are you afraid of? So you might feel like everything is too busy. There's too much on your plate already, so you can't do it now. Realistically, if something is important, you make time for it. So if you're rationalizing and saying you're just too busy right now, that's letting the resistance get to you. Critics, family and friends, and I've talked about this in a lot of other videos, how surrounding yourself with people who support you and want the best for you and from you is critical. Because if they don't, if they are fighting their own resistance and feeling a little bitter that you're starting to fight yours with success, they will say and do things that will hold you back and push you back down. And you have to recognize that it's resistance coming at you, and you have to be able to just step aside and keep on going. And so fear, it is cloaked. The resistance is cloaked in so many different forms that will hold you back. So the first thing I do is I look at the fear and I go, my life is not in danger. I. I'm probably not at risk of physical harm, so I'm afraid. But I'm going to do it anyways. The next thing is to always go back to the greater reason why you're doing it, because there's always fear. But if you're doing it to have an impact, to have value, then you can go back to that piece. And I did this radio show in 2015 with this woman who says she meets a lot of people who have books that they have never, they've written books that they've never published. And, and so when she meets them, she says, do you think your book is going to help people? And when they say yes, of course, they need it, they're stuck. Then she looks them in the eye and she says, well, how long are you going to leave them stuck for? Your fear is keeping you from helping other people. So whenever you feel it's slowing you down, go back to that. How long are you going to leave those other people without your message? How long are you going to leave them stuck? And finally, I'll leave you with the third thought. There is risk in everything you do in life. I mean, let's face it, every time you get in your car, step outside your house, you're taking a risk. And so yes, when you shoot a video and you hit publish and other people watch it, there's a risk they won't like it. You write a book and you put it on Amazon, there's a risk that people will write mean reviews about it. But if you never do it, you will not reap the rewards. Because there is no reward in life without risk. There's no reward in investment if you don't take risks. There's no reward in relationships if you don't take risks, right? If you never allow yourself to fall in love, you'll never get the rewards of a wonderfully happy, positive relationship. So you have to take risks to get rewards. So whenever I feel myself resisting pulling back, letting resistance get me, I remind myself of that as well. Take a look at those 2016 goals. And if it's boring, mundane, not really going to benefit anybody, doesn't scare you, just take those goals and go. And write down that one goal that has you excited and probably really freakin scared and get to work on that goal. This year, if you need help and you're not sure where to start, drop me a line.
