What Could Make Draft2Digital Reject Your Book?

Julie Broad explains why Draft2Digital rejected a client's ebook for mentioning "Amazon" in reference to a TV series. Automated filters flag words like "Amazon" and "free" in titles, so upload books weeks early to fix rejections before launch.

Fun fact. There are things you can innocently write about inside your book that can get it kicked back from distribution. Stick around. I'll tell you the interesting one we encountered recently and the fixes available if it happens to you. Hey there. I'm Julie the Book Broad award winning author and founder of Book Launchers, your professional self publishing team that will help you write, publish and promote a money making impact creating nonfiction book as part of our service, my team manages the online, always nitpicky and slightly painful task of uploading your book everywhere that you want distribution. In most cases this means IngramSpark for bookstores and Amazon everywhere other than Amazon.com, kDP for Kindle and Amazon.com and Draft2Digital for wide ebook distribution. I talked about ebook distribution in this video right here and I'll put it at the end so you can catch up if you missed it during that upload process. There are sometimes errors and flags that come up. Usually it's image issues or some other minor issue, but every once in a while something will catch you off guard. The latest was inside one of our client's books where he referenced an Amazon TV series. It doesn't matter which one, although in case you're wondering, there's several that I really like, like the marvelous Ms. Maisel and Bosch. I love Bosch when he was a character in a book and I love him even more in a TV series. Anyway, those aren't even the shows he referenced. Draft 2 Digital sent us a note back that the book was rejected for the use of the word. I need the drumroll again. Amazon. Is this a turf war or what now? We laughed at this thinking if you've written a book about the Amazon jungle, you're in for a fun journey fighting your ebook distribution. But seriously, at this point we had two options. Contact Draft 2 Digital and explain that the context of the word was not directing people to buy something from Amazon. Or just change the wording for simplicity. We just removed the reference to Amazon and left it as the TV series title. In talking about this on a recent livestream, Kevin McGuire posted that this can happen with Amazon if you put the word free in your book title. For example Eat fat free and have no fun. I think that'd be a good book actually, but I just made it up. But it's a legit use of free. But your book would get rejected because of that title. At that point, you can change that awesome title or contact Amazon and push for approval. You have to remember that there are bots behind these decisions and they're not totally versed on context yet, so sometimes human intervention is required. But I wanted to mention this for two reasons. One is to think about what you're putting in your book. Apple doesn't want you linking to Amazon and possibly even mentioning Amazon triggers this now, which could be why Draft 2 Digital rejected the book mentioning Amazon. Right now, Amazon Books is the only one I know of that has this restriction, but if you know of others, let's share in the comments below. 2. There is no master list of things that can cause your book to get rejected because it's changing all the time. We run into new things all the time as we're helping clients, so give yourself time. Just because your book is done, do not assume you're going to be able to launch it in a few days. If you're planning a specific launch date, get your book done early and load it up so you can find out about these problems early. If you set a date, promote that date. But upload your book in the very last minute and you get it kicked back, you're gonna be scrambling to find something that's causing your book to be rejected. So time is your friend. And for a lower stress book launch, I I highly recommend you give yourself a lot of time. Have you uploaded a book and had it rejected for something weird? Share that below. And when you comment the day a video is released, you'll be entered to win some fantabulous noboringbooks swag. And commenting also puts you in the running to be one of my YouTube besties. An elite crew of incredibly supportive, fun and smart people like Scott Bryant, Keith Wheeler Books, Gene Hobbs, Stone Castle Publications, and of course the fantastic Kevin McGuire.
