Julie Broad says most books fail not because they're poorly written but because authors don't position them strategically from the start. Good books struggle to sell when they're not built to support a brand or business. Success requires planning your audience and business goals before you write the first page.

This is about setting that book up to build the bigger thing. And one of the reasons I became so passionate about this is because authors would come to me with their book all the time and they would go, "Here, help me market this book." And sometimes it was actually a pretty good book and we would try to market it and it was so hard. Not because it was a bad book, but because it was not positioned from the beginning. It wasn't set up to build a business, to build a brand, and sometimes it wasn't even set up to actually market it because good stories are are hard to sell. You're competing against celebrities. You're competing against other people that are famous where people are curious about their story, so they buy that story. When you're marketing a book and you're trying to build a brand and build a business around it, the stuff that creates success, it starts the day you think you're going to start writing a book.
