I Predicted The Apple Watch In 2004

Daniel Bourke reads a 2004 school speech pitching a watch with GPS, note-taking, health tracking, and fingerprint security. Many features he imagined as a kid are now in the Apple Watch, though some like built-in air-conditioning never happened.

Hello everyone, welcome back to day 85 of the Daniel Bourke Show. Now I'm doing this on my iPhone camera because the battery on my other camera just died and I'm really pumped up to do it right now. So I'm just going to improvise and, and run with it. This will be a relatively short episode. I'll try and keep it under 5 minutes, but nonetheless, I've had an amazing day. I hope whatever you're up to, you're having an awesome day too. Thank you so much for tuning in on YouTube. Thank you so much for listening to the podcast. Really means a lot to me. But what's this episode going to be about? You know, if you listen to the other episode a few days ago, I think it was day 82 or 83 or something, I talked about my first time speaking in public in year 6 in 2004, back when I was 11 years old. I did a speech called the Wacko Watch. And could you believe it? I found the speech and it was in the archives of my mum's computer when I first wrote it back in 2004. And it's got all the Year 6, like, type spelling mistakes that I would have and whatnot. And I still remember getting up. It was a massive bout of nostalgia when I saw this. I still remember getting up on stage and shaking, having my little palm cards— I don't know if you can see them— cut out of this A4 sheet of paper, and I was shaking and I'm really nervous to deliver this speech, but nonetheless, I'm going to read it out to you. I'm pretty sure I predicted the Apple Watch back in 2004. So, are you always late for school or work? Never on time for important meetings? Never home for dinner? Well, you need a Wacko Watch. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and adjudicator today, my aim will be to persuade you to buy a Wacko Watch. Yet another great product from Burke Industries Inc. First, this watch comes with all the standard stuff you as intelligent people would know about. It tells you the time and the date and makes that irritating beep beep beep beep beep when you least expect it. Now let's move on to the high-tech gadgets. This watch comes with the reverse cycle air conditioning so you can be climatized all year round. You no longer have to worry about replacing that flat battery Because the watch is solar powered. Not by direct sunlight, but by indirect sunlight. I don't know how I would get it to do that. We do not want you to get skin cancer, do we? And for all you fashion freaks out there, here's one fancy gadget just for you. The watch will automatically change colour to suit what you're wearing. Are you blown away yet? Thought all your dreams had come true, but wait! There's more! Don't worry about taking notes anymore. This watch can record everything that is said by your teacher and stores only the relevant info in its memory bank. You can never misplace this watch because it will always find you with its built-in GPS tracking device. Did I mention the anti-theft on this watch? It will only activate using your fingerprint. And for no extra cost, That's right, no extra, you will have access to state-of-the-art satellite navigation and communication system so you can always ring Domino's and find your way there as well. Now that I mentioned most of this watch's great gadgets, to get this fabulous watch, you will have to call Wacko Hotline on 1-800-AND-I-SAY and say, "I would like to buy yet another great product from Burke Industries." Let me just go over what I've said. It comes with time, date, reverse cycle air conditioner, solar powered, color coordinated, able to record notes in its memory bank, GPS tracking device, anti-theft system, and state-of-the-art navigation and communication system. One more thing, if you buy it and mention my name, Big Berkey, you will get 50% off, and if you call within the next 13,467 seconds, You will receive a free set of steak knives. I'm excited. So, that was the speech back in 2004 that won me a whole bunch of public speaking competitions. And now that we're in 2017, 13 years later, almost a decade and a half, it seems like the actual technology I was talking about is coming to fruition, especially the note-taking, the GPS, everything except basically the solar power from indirect sunlight. I'm not sure what I meant by indirect sunlight, but who knows. And reverse cycle air conditioning. I think we've got a few steps to go before watches can give reverse cycle air conditioning. But I thought I'd just give you all a blast from the past. I was looking at some old photos today as well, and it gave me some great flashbacks of good memories with good people. And that's the daily challenge, actually. Dig up some of your memories from the past and, or whatever, photos, work, schoolwork, whatever it is. It's just something from the past. Read over it and just, I don't know, have a laugh, smile. And yeah, nostalgia is a good feeling. Well, I think it is anyway. So thank you all for listening. This is the first time on the iPhone camera, so the next few will be on the— I'll make sure the camera will be charged. I'll just edit a whole bunch of YouTube videos, so that's why it's flat. But nonetheless, thank you for listening. Thank you all for watching, and I hope you have an awesome day. And oh, don't forget to call someone and tell them you love them. We'll catch you tomorrow. It's day 86. I believe I'm interviewing someone. I'm a bit nervous. Nah, I'll get it done. See you later, guys.
