My Instagram is Fake - TDBS 15 April 2017

In this episode of the Daniel Bourke Show (day 74, April 15, 2017), the host records a combined podcast and vlog from his car, using the session as a live experiment in content creation. He explains why he’s merging audio‑only podcasts with video— to practice public speaking, double the output, and test what format works best. He recounts his morning jet‑ski adventure, then shifts to a self‑review of the previous day’s video, noting concrete feedback: smile more, speak slower, and keep episodes under ten minutes. The host outlines his current life situation (self‑employed, living with parents, no steady income) and his ambition to turn his strengths—fitness, nutrition, and a growing interest in programming/AI—into a viable business. He reflects on the contrast between his curated Instagram image (shirtless, perfect lighting) and his everyday reality, expressing a desire to share more authentic content. Influences such as Gary Vee, Steve Cook, and other fitness entrepreneurs are mentioned as models for blending fitness and tech entrepreneurship. He concludes with a daily social challenge—greet a stranger—and invites listeners to follow his evolving journey, emphasizing consistency, honesty, and personal growth.

Yo, what is going on everyone? Back again, day 74. It is April 15, 2017. Got the year right this time. And we're at round 2 of the video/podcast combo. I've got my phone down here recording the podcast. I've kind of transitioned the podcast from being a daily thing to it more not just being a podcast but being a video cast as well, or a vlog type thing. Why? Well, because I want to start making YouTube videos, and if I'm making a podcast, why don't I just double up and make it a video, practice public speaking at the same time in front of a camera? Because usually I just talk into a microphone on my phone like this. I'll be just talking down and I'll have topics here and sitting in my car most of the time because it's, it's one of the most quiet, quiet place I can have in my house. Check out my dog. I wonder if you can see this. She doesn't know what I'm doing. I'll be in there soon, Bella. If you don't know what I was just talking about or just doing and you're listening to the podcast, check out my YouTube channel. You can find it at mrdeburgh.com/videos. But nonetheless, I'm recording this video in my car and also this podcast in my car at the same time. Because I'm trying to work out what works best for me. I'm trying to, I don't know, improve the content that I create. And I don't know if I'm doing a bad job. I'm gonna just keep going and going and going, putting something out there every day and seeing where it goes. But what I get up to today. So this morning I woke up pretty early, about 5:40, went jet skiing with my friend George, his dad, and then a few other people. Went to Tangalooma, which is about a 40-minute jet ski ride, something I've never done before. And Tangalooma is a holiday place that me and my family go, um, every year. I've almost spent a whole year of my life there because we go for 2 weeks at the end of the year every year, and I'm almost 24 years old. I'm 24 this year. So that was really fun. That was something I'd never done before, took me out of my comfort zone, was a lot of fun. I got probably— I'm probably a bit red in places because I got sun-kissed. But nonetheless, I had a great time, came home, slept for a few hours, and now I've just been writing, editing, editing yesterday's video that I did for the podcast, day 73 of the Daniel Bourke Show. It's not on YouTube yet. I said I was going to upload it— when was it? After I finished the video yesterday. I don't know, when was it? But I finished editing now. So it's ready to upload. I haven't uploaded it yet because my brothers are on the internet, and if I upload it, I'll get in trouble. So I'm gonna upload both of them either early, very early tomorrow morning, or both of these videos, so day 73 and today, when I go to my friend's house who has a lot faster internet tomorrow night. So we'll see. It's all an experiment, and I'm in no rush. I'm in no rush. I just have to do make sure I'm doing something consistently, giving myself feedback. That brings me onto the topic, first topic of the show, feedback. So I watched back the video I did yesterday, and one of the things I noticed was that I didn't smile enough. I was just sort of talking and yada yada, bouncing from topic to topic, but I didn't get my chompers out enough. I didn't get a juicy chomper shake. That's right. I need to start smiling more and maybe talk a little slower and maybe condense the episode down a little bit more. So, I've got a timer on the iPad. It's going to go off at 11 minutes, or even if I did set it, who knows. So, we're almost— we're at 4 minutes. I'm going to set a timer now. 7 minutes. So, once that goes off, I'm going to try to keep these under 10 minutes. Why? Because I think 10 minutes is a good number. I can get a few topics in there, talk it, talk about it. Doesn't take too much time out of your day to get some value, and I can make them quickly, edit them quickly, get them up on YouTube, and keep going, keep going to work on more stuff for the next day. But what else do I want to talk about? Now, I want to know how I can improve the business side of my life. So right now I'm unemployed. Well, I'm self-employed. I live at home with my parents. I don't have a job. I'm not— I don't have a paid income right now, and I have a bunch of savings and that whatnot. So that's what I'm living off right now, and I'm trying to work out how I can sort of generate money in a way that is— make a live at— no, no, don't worry about money for the time being. How to make a life for myself that I'm gonna Enjoy. And this is why I'm doing the podcast, is why I'm doing this video. It's sort of— I'm trying all these different things and figuring out what works, what doesn't work. I know one thing that does work for me a lot: fitness. Fitness and nutrition. That's easy for me. Absolutely easy. And so how can I work that out, work those two passions that I have, or the areas that I'm knowledgeable in, and make a business out of it, bring value to other people and make business out of it. So maybe one of my, my ideas are telling me YouTube. Hey, as I'm recording, this is not about fitness entirely yet, but maybe it can be in the future. I've got some fitness videos on my YouTube already if you want to check it out. But what else can I do? I don't really know yet. I'm also learning to program because I'm interested in programming. Artificial intelligence fascinates me. And I really think that that's where the rest of the world's going. So I'm trying to educate myself in tech. I really want to be a part of that. I think I can bring some value to people's lives by being knowledgeable in the tech side of things and the fitness side of things and nutrition side of things and combining them in some way and then delivering something to people that they can get value from. What was this like? This is like a kamehameha. So this is fitness, nutrition, programming, public speaking, YouTube, Kamehameha. There's a cover-up for the video. I'll just sit in this Kamehameha pose for a bit. Now, but yeah, I watched this video by Gary Vee, and it's like the state of fitness entrepreneurs. And like, I sort of look up to a fair few fitness entrepreneurs, if I'm honest. Steve Cook, Matt Ogus, Lane Norton, all the top guys on YouTube and whatnot and Instagram, etc., etc. And I'm wondering, how can I be like them? I sort of, I like what they're doing. And at the same time, I look at people in the startup world, I'm like, how can I be like them? I like startups and I like tech and whatnot. So I'm trying to find the crossroads and what, how does making a podcast and how does making YouTube videos relate to all this? Who knows? I'll work it out. It's what my intuition is telling me, and that's literally all it is. After watching videos on YouTube, reading a lot of articles, reading a lot of books, I'm trying to show my work, express myself in one way or another, whether it be through a podcast, through sharing photos, through sharing video. But I'm trying to discover it. Who knows? And if you look at my Instagram profile, actually, this is what I need to triple down on, business side of things. I'm terrible at business. I'm the first to admit that. So, that's what I'm trying to improve on. I'm reading some business books, I'm reading some sales books, Zig Ziglar, Seth Godin, etc., etc., marketing. And that's what I'm trying to improve on because as I said, fitness is easy for me. Nutrition is easy for me. I've been doing it for years, but the business is something I need to double down on. And I watched this video by Gary Vee and that's inspired me. So if you look at this image I'm trying to portray, if you look at my Instagram, the last 5 images or last 4 images of me shirtless and looking good in a good downlight, I edited some of them as well. And I'll be honest, yeah, that's— I was trying to get likes from it. So what was I— what sort of image am I trying to portray from that? That's not real. I don't look like that all the time. I look like this most of the time. Because I don't have a job, I get up and I study for 6 to 7 hours, and I wear clothes like this all day, and I don't do my hair. It looks scraggly most of the time, um, and I don't have my shirt off unless it's hot, and it's not always perfect downlighting, and I'm not always tensing my bicep in photos. So maybe I'll just try to share more real stuff. This, this video right here, this is more real. This is me being honest. And what's the next point I got here? So yeah, feedback on the last video that I gave myself: smile more, make it shorter, make it sweeter. So I don't know, maybe I'm trying to— how to make it sweeter? I don't know, spice things up a little. Talk— really, I'm just talking about myself here, but maybe that's what I need to do. Who knows? This is a road of discovery. I read this thing that your personality is almost unrecognisable, like year on year or whatever, and I think that's true for me. If I look back at myself this time last year, I'd be unrecognisable to who I am now. Maybe not 100%, but definitely— I don't know if it was 100% or something. You change massively, and I'm going through a period of change right now, and I'm happy that I'm sort of recording all this because I'll be able to look back in 10 years and think, oh, that worked out well, or that didn't work out well, and improve from that. But I want to triple down on the business side of things, start sharing more real stuff, being honest, because me shirtless in good down lighting is not who I am all the time. Most of the time I'm just having fun, having a laugh, and I try to stay as humble as possible in terms of fitness because I know, I know where I started and I know how long it took me to get where I am. So Maybe just start sharing how I'm learning about business, how I'm learning about programming, because I'm at the bottom of the heap right there. So that'll be, I don't know, a lot more real. But nonetheless, I'm gonna wrap this up. I actually got a daily challenge for you all. Say hello to someone you've never met before. So whether you go to a cafe, you're walking along a footpath or whatever, say good morning, good afternoon, good evening. To whoever it is. If you've never met them before, even if you know who they are but you hardly ever say hello to them— time is going off, short but sweet, I'm trying to make it short but sweet— say hello. But nonetheless, thank you all for listening, thank you all for watching. It's, it's— I'm still getting used to this combo of video and podcast. If you want to check out any of my stuff, mrdeburgh.com/blog/podcast/videos They all work. But love you all. Tell someone you love them, and I'll catch you tomorrow. It's day 75 of the Daniel Bourke Show. Catch you later.
