Well, hello again. This is Brad Costanzo, just like the announcer said. And today I've got a moron on my show. I mean, we're talking about a complete and utter moron. And you can hear him laughing. I joke, but Matt Traynor, welcome to the Call.
Thanks, man. Thanks for having me.
All right, now, I call you a moron because you actually call yourself a moron. You've got a website. It's themarketingmoron.com is that right?
Yep.
Cool. So for folks just joining us, I want to thank everybody and let them know that, you know, this entire show is dedicated to serving you. Like I said, sizzling hot business advice, whether it's marketing or sales or business growth and development. And I try to bring some of the brightest minds and morons onto the show as I can. And I have known, Matt, I've known you for several years now. We both live out here in San Diego, and I followed you and some of the stuff you were doing even before we became friends. But the marketing moron is really kind of. It's a great name, but it's a huge misnomer because you really are one of the. The smartest, I would almost say a savant when it comes to marketing strategies. Just like me. You're always thinking way out of the box. You throw the box away in a lot of cases. And you've done. We were talking offline and I said you've done a little bit of everything. And he's like, no, I've actually done a lot of everything. So that's why I wanted to have you on the call. So thanks for joining me here today.
Yeah, no problem, man. Thanks for the compliment. Too cool.
No, you bet. So one of the things that you recently did just the other day, and I noticed this on Facebook, and it definitely made me reach out and say, okay, I've got to get you on this show because everybody's gonna probably love to listen to this. But you gave yourself a new challenge in marketing because maybe you were bored, I don't know. But what is your challenge? I want you to explain this.
You know, I was actually, yeah, I was inspired by a few other people I've seen do this before. And before I get started. Is this PG13 or can we have at it? All right, all right.
I'll beep you if I got to, but that wouldn't be any fun.
Yeah, no kidding. I hate. I. I'm just. It's bad if I try to censor myself. So, yeah, I seen a few other people do this and I was like, fuck, I could do that. And, you know, I saw somebody do a $50,000, $50,000 in 30 day challenge using no previous resources, all that kind of thing. So I said, fuck that. I do $100,000. I thought about it more like, screw that, I'll do $200,000. So I gave myself a little bit more time, but basically it's, what would I do if I was kicked out on the street? No money. I pissed off everybody, had no resources left, so I couldn't call anybody for help. And all I had, literally was a thousand dollars in my name and what's in my brain. And so I just started a $200,000 90 day challenge with those kind of parameters. And yeah, that was the idea.
So your goal is to make $200,000 or more in 90 days or less, using thousand bucks, starting capital and no other prior advantages, et cetera. Then you invited people to look over your shoulder and watch follow along as you did this. Is that correct?
Yep, yep. There's a squeeze page up. I did for that. And yeah, the squeeze page created a little bit of fervor.
Yeah. So what's great is this is what I see on my Facebook feed from you, which was I tattooed your name on my ass. Like, click here. So I was like, all right, I know your humor and I know where this is going. So I come over there. You want to explain what that's about?
Well, it's a study in how to make anything relevant with anything. And I had actually had a few drinks the other night, and a friend of mine, we were walking by a tattoo parlor in Ocean beach and he just cracked a joke about getting his name tattooed on my ass. And I said, no, let's do it, I'll do it. And. And he thought I was joking, you know, and of course, I don't really joke about joking.
I take my jokes very seriously. Yeah.
So he said, hey, if you want to do it, I'll pay for it. So I said, okay. And he didn't know what I really meant. So we went up there and then you know, tattooed, you know, the words Y O, U R your name on my ass. And in the middle of it, he said, oh, you should get my name on your ass too. And so they. I said, okay, whatever. How much more? And then, like, 40 bucks more or something. And so they did that one too, because, you know.
Because why not?
Because why not? You know what? I'm once since I got over 40. I don't give a shit, man. I just have fun with life. And who cares if I have tattoos on my ass? What difference does it make? You know, it's not like I walk around bare ass all the time, so people see him thankfully. But, yeah, but, you know, it's already won a few barbets. It's something that I, you know, I. I do this a lot. I'll tend to sacrifice myself for so everybody can have fun. But then I used it as a. I thought, how can I tie this in as a marketing kind of thing? And. And I. My. My spin was, hey, if somebody stupid like me can get something like that and still go and make $200,000 in 90 days, then you probably can too, without having to focus on getting tattoo.
That's awesome. So I want to come Back to the $200,000 you name on my ass challenge in just a few moments, and I kind of want to come back and revisit that strategy. But backing up a little bit in the beginning of this, I said, you've done a lot of everything. If you had a marketing superpower or any kind of a business or marketing superpower that you've developed and it's better than your other skills, what would you say some of your primary skill set there is? What have people sought you out for your either advice or service?
Well, my biggest success I've ever had, at one point, I had 60 employees on staff in four offices around the world and had about 15,000 websites personally that I had that was just doing SEO. And that was my bread and butter for a long, long. And it fits my personality really well. So that's probably my marketing superpower.
Besides that, understanding search engine optimization. Nice. Okay, cool. So what gets you the most excited in marketing? Is it sitting there building links and whatnot, or what do you get really fired up about?
I get fired up about doing dumb videos, like, you know, and, you know, and the other thing I really enjoy, too, is writing. You know, that's probably my biggest marketing skill.
I was wondering if you were gonna say that.
Yeah, that's where I have the most fun, and I look forward to it. You know, I crack myself up. You know, with my own writing and email copy and all of that. So I just combine the two, SEO with my own writing style and it's fun. I like it.
That's great. You know, just recently maybe it was, I guess time flies, it's probably been about a year or so. And I know that you were, you were going through some experiments and doing some email marketing and you even offered up some of your services to a handful of clients for a decent amount of money to better write their email copy for all different types of businesses. But if I remember correctly, you were saying you'd kind of crack the code or figure out something that really helps drive engagement and actions. Where a lot of businesses, depending on what kind of business they are, whether they're a guru or an expert versus a company that has a more corporate feel. A lot of times emails, first of all, if it's got a boring subject, it won't get opened. Unless it's so spot on that if I'm looking for Las Vegas hotels and I happen to get an email that says, hey, here's a great hotel in Las Vegas on sale, I may open it. But in general, you've got to get opened, you've got to get read, you've got to get clicked, and then you got to take an action. So what is it that you kind of figured out as a, let's say, how would you wrap some bacon around email marketing and email copy?
Well, yeah, and it's funny because I've been teaching this for quite a while now, at least a couple of years now, and I still don't see anybody doing it and I just don't get it. But the biggest thing you got to do is just inject some personality into this. Most marketing emails are just that, marketing emails, they're boring as nobody gives a, nobody wants to read them. And in fact, if you just look at Internet marketing as a niche, the only reason that people read those damn emails is because of the, you know, the, the dollar figures and the results that are in them. That's it. You take that out and they're boring as hell. And you know, try to apply that to any other niche, you're going to have a major bomb. So it's just injecting some damn personality and loosening up and having some fun with it. That's the thing.
Where can people, you know, a lot of the times these are run by, you know, serious business folks who take their job and their life very seriously. And it's hard to sometimes put on a funny or, I mean it doesn't always have to be funny on the personality, but I mean, I think it should be authentic and human. Right. So what's the easiest way for somebody who isn't naturally skilled in that to kind of develop personality in their writing? Is there. Do you have any kind of suggestions for that?
Yeah, I think the biggest thing is just start sharing stories from your own life. You know, just open up and be transparent. Transparency is the key to it, you know, I mean, you've read my emails. They're raw. I mean, I don't hold anything back, you know, and, you know, not everybody has the ability to do that or desire to do that, but you can at least open up and still tell some personal stories from your life. You know, you don't have to be as raw and, and try to be funny like me, but, you know, at least just be real and try to relate some stories in your life with your family and. Because that's what people care about. People want to connect with people. People don't want to connect with a corporation or a marketing machine. You know, they want to connect with another person.
Social media has proven that. I mean, it's not a fad. It continues to grow. People are sharing, they want to connect. The more human, the more shareable, the more real the story is, the more they feel as though somebody's talking to them. One of the strategies I used to do back when I was running more newsletters on my own as well is just share random photos in my newsletter, maybe in the P.S. by the way, hey, here's, you know, sometimes I did stuff with my, you know, me and my dad or take, you know, take a picture of my girlfriend and I, or my dog or just anything, you know, hey, I'm out and about. Thought I'd take a kind of a selfie and interjecting that so it doesn't have to be super witty or super funny. You can just be real authentic and, you know, maybe insights. Take a stand.
Yeah, it could be something. Take something that you were going to post on Facebook and just turn that into a subject line for an email and make an email out of it. Same thing. You know, don't treat any email any differently. You know, that's. That's a big takeaway, I would think.
Absolutely. You know, one of my. One of my biggest open rates or. Yeah. For an email I ever created years ago was I must be drunk to send. To be sending this to you. Something like AI must be drunk to push send. And the way the key to that and any Email copywriter will know, but folks who don't know is that you better be able to tie the subject line into the email body copy immediately.
Immediately.
Yeah, Right. And the whole rationale behind that was, I believe, something like, you know, I'm opening up, I'm telling you some stuff I really shouldn't be doing. And maybe it's because I had a couple drinks and I'm just feeling looser, but I wanted to come, you know, shoot straight with you, so. And it was one of the best open rates and click through rates I've ever had. Now, what else besides writing? I've known that you're pretty adept at driving massive amounts of traffic to websites and figuring out loopholes in systems that a lot of folks miss. What would you say is the favorite loophole in business marketing? Anything that you've ever personally kind of found and exploited and are free to talk about?
Well, this is gonna sound contrived, but it's totally not, because this is just something that I've figured out recently, and that is that the biggest loophole I see right now is in SEO. And because of all the big updates, you know, Panda, Penguin, all those updates, Google has run out of bullets. You know, they've. They've kind of, you know, done all the big, big slaps they can do. So everything else is really minor. In fact, the last Panda 4 update was really minor. And that's. They painted themselves into a corner where now. Now that we know what they're looking for, man, SEO is easier than it's ever been. And the best part about it, with all those slaps and updates and stuff, everybody's scared shitless. Now. Everybody's scared to do anything. So you got a perfect storm. Everybody's scared. All the competition has been flushed out and Google's painting themselves in the corner. So, I mean, it's a wide open field. I'm telling you, I've been doing SEO for. Since 1999, almost 15 years, and it's easier now than it was back in 1999. I'm not shitting you. That's amazing.
So does SEO play a role in your new 200,000 in 90 day strategy?
Yeah, it's definitely that. It's just a play on the whole virtual real estate model.
Oh, that's great. Are you able to share any more information on that here, or would you just like to send people to a website where they can follow along with what you're doing?
Oh, I mean, they can go and follow along, but I'm not, I'm not scared to share it here. It's all public anyway. But so yeah, just the idea is to find big profitable niches that you can go after that have a lot of eyeballs in front of them, go rank and get in front of those eyeballs and then rent those spots to people. Just like virtual landlord model.
Yep. So give whoever's listening an example that they can maybe understand.
Well, for instance, if you wanted to, you know, the big one that everybody seems to target, which is so stupid now that everybody still piles onto it, is the, you know, going after for instance like personal injury attorneys or something like that. So target personal injury attorney San Diego, get your site ranked up there number one. Then go contact, you know, several different personal injury attorneys and either do a rev share agreement with them, a Legion agreement, or just rent, straight rent the site from to them. And that's my model now, is renting the sites so I can just rank for, you know, hundreds of thousands of keywords with tens of thousands of sites and crank in $1,000 a month per keyword and just automate the whole process.
That's great. Yeah, you're right. It's virtual landlording. You're finding some place because you're getting your website into a place that is very valuable territory because it is lead generating for personal injury attorney. And you know, those guys are, if they're actively marketing and paying for leads, they can put a, they can quantify what having that spot is worth. And by renting it out to them, if they ever stop paying you, you can, you own it. So you can just pull it back and evict them and go to their competition, right?
Yeah, exactly. Yep. And their people are lining up like crazy for any of those spots. You know, I think SEO is probably the top skill you can have other than probably copywriting in Internet marketing just because of that factor right there. If you can get eyeballs on stuff, that's a huge skill to have.
Absolutely. You know, it's, you know, traffic is, everybody's competing for the same traffic. But when you, when you know where to find it and how to direct the traffic, there's a lot of great converting offers out there that you can do or you can, you know, lease or license that website to, to somebody who needs it, that is definitely bacon wrapped. So if folks want to follow along and they want to learn a little bit more about what you're doing it, how you're doing it, see a couple of risque tattoos, where should they go? Where should they go?
Look themarketingmoron.com that's themarketingmoron.com just because I own every single domain around the marketing moron except for marketingmoron.com because some idiot is sitting on it.
Smart.
Yeah, he's a moron.
And I went there right now. So yes, if you go there the day that you know right now you will see a picture of a butt. You know what I by the way, what I love. So this goes, you know, study. I'm talking to the listener here, but study Matt's copywriting on this page. It's really, really good. It is full of personality. It's full of he's having fun. One of the things I've always loved is when you I know it's on a pop up and over on your sidebar a lot of people will say subscribe to receive free email updates or subscribe to our newsletter and you put subscribing saves kittens. And the great thing is I never explain it. It creates an open loop that never gets closed.
