Hello everyone and welcome to LeftBrain Investment Research. I'm Madhu Chaudhary, investment analyst here at LeftBrain. I'm here to give you my recent insights on Baozun, which is often referred to as the Shopify of China, and conclude this video with our thoughts on whether the stock makes for a good investment. Let's start by reviewing what Baozun actually does. Often referred to as the Shopify of China, Baozun offers operational and supply chain solutions to companies especially global brands that want to expand their e-commerce presence in the growing Chinese market. The growth in Chinese e-commerce is primarily being driven by increases in disposable incomes as well as move from brick-and-mortar to online retail. Baozun's key e-commerce solutions include inventory management, setup and operations of online stores for brands, digital marketing and brand development, warehousing facilities and fulfillment services, And finally, customer service. So why do Western brands engage with local Chinese e-commerce services providers? Western brands typically excel at product innovation and branding. However, that doesn't translate into success automatically in foreign countries such as China. Local supply chain expertise, understanding of local consumer tastes, local business relationships, as well as understanding of local laws are necessary to succeed in foreign countries. and global brands find building this infrastructure from scratch daunting. E-commerce facilitators such as Baozun help these brands focus on what they do best and allow them to grow in China with lower investments and risks. Let's examine why Baozun has become the most successful Chinese e-commerce services provider. The company benefited from an early mover advantage and has developed strong expertise in supply chain and e-commerce operations in the country. In fact, the CEO of Baozun led another supply chain company in China prior to founding of Baozun. Alibaba was an early backer and still holds a mid-teen stake in the company. The company has special access to Alibaba's database, which helps it provide highly informed and efficient user data analytics to its brand partners. The company is also highly rated on major marketplaces as a service provider, which allows Baozun's customers strong access to these large platforms. Now that we have a clear picture of the company's business success, let's look at how that translates into financials. Gross merchandise value transacted on the company's platform has grown from RMB 4.2 billion in 2014 to RMB 44 billion in 2019. Revenue has grown from RMB 1.6 billion in 2014 to RMB 7.3 billion in 2019. And finally, free cash flow, or FCF, has grown from negative RMB 95.6 million in 2014 to positive RMB 162 million in 2019. Finally, let's take a look at the valuation. Given the company's strong market position in a growing end market, the company's forward price-to-sales multiple of 2.4 times is attractive in our mind. So what, what does all this mean for Baozun stock? We think the stock has upside over the next few years as the company benefits from secular growth in the Chinese e-commerce market. Additionally, It is also set to garner larger share of this growing pie due to its strong competitive positioning and reputation as a formidable e-commerce services partner to larger brands. Finally, the attractive valuation further adds to the bull case. For more investment insights with a view through the left brain lens, visit us at leftbrainii.com to like, share, and subscribe.
