Brian Tracy says persisting through lesser difficulties builds your capacity to persist through greater difficulties and achieve even greater things. There is one habit you can develop that will contribute more to your success than anything else you can do. That habit is self discipline. Noted success authority KOP Kopmeier recorded 1000 principles of success. Brian Tracy asked him which one was the most important and he told him self discipline. Napoleon Hill interviewed 500 of the wealthiest people in the United States. He concluded that self discipline was the master key to getting rich. So what is self discipline? Self discipline is the ability to make yourself do the right thing, whether you feel like it at the moment or not. Harvard scientist Dr. Edward Banfield spent 50 years researching the traits that made people successful. He found two keys to upward mobility in a the ability to think about the long term and the ability to delay gratification in the short term. Self discipline simply means that you're able to sacrifice pleasure in the present to get greater rewards in the future. Self disciplined people are willing to do things that unsuccessful people won't do. People who are unsuccessful will refuse to do things they don't like. Successful people understand that doing the right thing, even when they don't feel like it, is the key to success. Self discipline not only creates greater rewards in the future, it also has an immediate payoff. When you exercise self discipline, you respect and like yourself more. Your brain rewards you by releasing endorphins. These feel good chemicals make you feel happy and proud of yourself for doing the right thing. So how can you become more self disciplined? Self discipline is a habit that anyone can develop. You just need to practice with focus and concentration until the habit becomes ingrained. Do this every day. Repetition is key. Willpower is like a muscle. When you practice self discipline, your willpower becomes stronger and two things happen. First, you will achieve your goals faster. Second, you will have the strength of paper character to stick with your goals and never give up on them. It takes about 21 days to establish a new habit. Do these goal setting exercises in a disciplined and focused way every day for three weeks and your life will be transformed. Follow these five steps. First, set the stage by clarifying your goals. Ask yourself, what do I really want to do with my life? At first, you may not have a clear answer, but be patient. Keep on asking the question until a strong answer emerges. Second, imagine that you had $10 million, but you knew that you only had 10 more years to live. Practice this as vividly as you can in your mind. Then ask yourself, what changes would I make to my life? Right now. Third, fire up your imagination again. This time, imagine that there were no limits on what you could do. Imagine you have a magic wand. If you wave it, you will have as much time, money, experience, education and contacts as you need to achieve any goal in the world. Imagine what this would feel like. Then ask yourself, what will I do now? Fourth, get a spiral notebook to use for this. On the first day, write down 10 goals. Each goal should start with the word I followed by an action verb in the present tense. For example, you could write, I earn blank dollars a week. The next day and every day after that, open your notebook to a clean page, rewrite your 10 goals and start each goal with I. And always use the present tense as if you had already achieved the goals and you were describing your present success to somebody else. Don't look back at the previous pages before or while you're writing. Rewrite the goals completely from your memory. As you rewrite these goals every day, you'll notice that they develop and change over time. Do these steps every day for at least 21 days. Many people are surprised at how much and how quickly these easy exercises transform their lives. The goal setting exercises make it easy to clarify and refine your goals, giving you the confidence that you are going exactly in the direction that you need to go. When you return to the exercises every day, you prove to yourself that you have the strength of character to commit to your goals and see them through to completion. Together, these attributes will make you a goal achieving superstar. You will enjoy new heights of success. It all starts with self discipline. Once you make self discipline a habit, your life will never be the same. Now. We'd love to hear from you. So our question today is, are you ready to make self discipline a habit? Leave a comment below and we'll be sure to follow up with you. Thanks for watching. And as Brian Tracy says, if you want to change your future, take action and take action now.
