Brian Tracy gives a short spoken review about what he values in movies: strong plot and especially great dialogue. He recommends the film The King’s Speech as the best film he saw that year, praising its dialogue and noting it was a low-budget, high-return success (cost ~$15M vs. typical ~$60M Hollywood budget), became an Academy Award winner, and returned large profits to early investors. He also advises preferring films adapted from stage plays (examples: Mamma Mia; The Lion in Winter) because of the strength of pure dialogue.

Everybody has their own taste in movies. And one of the things that I don't like in movies is science fiction, sci fi, Transformers, stuff that is totally fraudulent. There's no reality to it at all. I don't like horror pictures or Saw one, Saw two, Saw three, Saw four. I really like movies that have a great plot, a great beginning, great middle, great end, great development. Now, the best movie that I've seen this year, and probably you've had the same experience, is a movie called the King's Speech. Now, the King's Speech is literally a work of art. It was a low budget picture. It cost $15 million to make. Average Hollywood picture costs about 60 million. So it didn't cost very much. Several people invested to produce this movie because nobody thought it would work. The people who invested a million, $2 million made back about $50 million each on the movie because it became such a worldwide success. Academy Award winner. And the whole movie is based on great dialogue. It's based on great wording and great interaction between the cast members. So that's what I look for. Interestingly enough, when movies started many years ago, what they did is they took a stage play and a stage play that was very effective, pure dialogue. They translate it and they made it into a movie. Pure dialogue. And they just enhanced it. Like for instance, the movie Mamma Mia. Came from the stage play Mamma Mia. Which was several actors on a small stage. So if you're looking for a good movie, look for a movie that was a good play. One of the best that you'll ever hear or see, by the way, is called the lion in Winter. And it was an award winning play on the London stage. And it's dialogue and it will rivet you from the very first word. Whereas other movies have enormous amount of movement, but the plot is very thin. It's unbelievable. And afterwards you walk out and you say, what a waste of time. So look for movies that have got great dialogue and great actors using the dialogue, and you find a lot of great movies that way.
