Mistakes You Should be Grateful for Making | Brian Tracy

Brian Tracy explains why four kinds of mistakes are actually gifts: jobs you hate teach discipline, wrong relationships end so right ones can start, moving cities changes your life, and failed risks teach you what works. Mark Cuban sold trash bags door-to-door before building his empire.

Hello, I'm Brian Tracy, and today I want to tell you about some mistakes that you may have made in your life that you should be grateful for having made. Life isn't about avoiding mistakes, it's about learning from them. Without mistakes and setbacks, we would have nothing to mold and harden us into our better selves. And many of the world's most successful people could never have gotten to where they are today without the mistakes they made along the way. That certainly applies to me personally. With that in mind, there are a few mistakes that you should be grateful for having made or for making. First, you may have taken a job that you really didn't want. Everyone starts out with dreams about what they want their career to be. While you should never give up on those dreams, sometimes there are important stepping stones along the way that cannot be skipped. Now a multi billionaire and the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban's first job was selling trash bags door to door. Obviously, this was not ideal employment for someone who dreams as big as Mark Cuban, but in the end, his first job taught him lessons in determination and salesmanship that he would apply later in life. Taking a job you don't necessarily enjoy isn't the mistake. The mistake is staying stagnated at that job and never moving forward. If you take a job, learn from it, make the most of it, all while constantly working toward the job you really want and then taking on a job you don't enjoy will end up being a mistake and that you're grateful for for having made sometimes all your life. Second Ending a Long Term Relationship Whenever someone ends a long term relationship, feelings of doubt and regret are almost always quick to follow. You may ask yourself, did I make a mistake here? You may wonder if you've thrown away your one chance at having a life partner and you may feel like you'll never find someone else again. The truth is though, that if your circumstances have led you to end a relationship, then that relationship was not the best one for you. In any case, good, healthy relationships may have their ups and downs, but if a person is led to the point that they really, truly want out of the relationship, then that relationship has run its course and dragging it on will benefit no one. Any something that is causing you pain or unhappiness is never a mistake, especially when ending it allows you to pursue something much better. When you do find a relationship that you can enjoy for the rest of your life, ending all your previous relationships will seem like the best decisions you ever made. Next Moving somewhere new, Packing up and moving somewhere New takes a lot of courage. For many people, the journey of leaving the place they have always called home and venturing out into the unknown is the most frightening challenge they will ever undertake. At first, moving may feel like a mistake. Chances are you won't know many people at first, and maybe no one, and you won't be familiar with the location. This can cause the initial stages of living somewhere new to be very lonely, confusing times. Given time though, learning the location and making new friends is bound to happen. Human beings have an incredible ability to adapt and to wherever they are and make it feel like home. If your reasons for moving were good, you'll almost certainly look back on the decision as being a good one. I remember years ago I moved from one city to another and I knew no one. I had only my car and I had to find a rented apartment and rented furniture to live there. However, that led to one job which led to another job, which led to another job which led to my marrying my wife. Finding her and marrying her and my first two children was the best decision I ever made in my life. You can never tell what can happen when you make a change. Finally Taking a Risk that Doesn't Pay Off Successful people take risks. The simple truth is that you cannot chase your dreams and pursue lofty goals without putting your time, money and efforts on the line. Many of the times the risks you take won't pay off. They can leave you battered and demoralized, wondering where to go next. They can cost you a lot of money. Some people let these failed risks defeat them. They try once or twice, get stung, and then retreat back to a relatively comfortable, risk free lifestyle. The world's most successful people, though based on the most current research, the ones who achieve their loftiest goals are the ones who pick themselves up, dust themselves off and try again. They sit back up to the table and they take another hand. Taking a risk that doesn't pay off isn't a mistake, it's a learning opportunity. Letting that failed risk scare you away from pursuing your goals is the mistake. If you can adopt the resolve and keep pushing forward, come what may, learning and adapting as you go along, then one of these days your risks are going to pay off. And once a risk pays off and you're able to succeed, all the failed risks along the way will be nothing but distant memories. Before we wrap up, I'd like to leave you with a thought to share with your friends and followers. What is your vision for yourself and your life? Where do you want to be in five years?
