Parkinson's Law How Successful People Manage Their Time Time management requires self discipline, self mastery, and self control more than anything else. Brian Tracy Everyone has the same 24 hours in a day, but how we use those hours is what has the ability to change our levels of personal and professional success. And the most successful people make the most out of those hours and manage their time well in order to level up their life. So how exactly do successful people manage their time? Most are aware of Parkinson's Law and have used it to plan their time more effectively. Parkinson's Law states that work expands to fill the time available for its completion. This means that no matter how much time you have allocated for your work, that is how long it will take. For example, if you block off 20 minutes for a given task, that task will take you 20 minutes. Start using Parkinson's Law to your advantage by following these simple five steps. Step one Set goals and priorities the first step to using Parkinson's Law to your advantage is to set goals and priorities. In writing, explain why the task is important and why it needs to be done. You may also use smart goals where the goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound to help you achieve them in the allocated time. Step 2 Define your project scope the next step is to clearly define your project scope by coming up with a single goal you hope to achieve. From there, reverse engineer exactly what you need to successfully complete the project. By tackling goals this way, with the end in mind, you can structure your use of time more efficiently. Step 3 Preplan for potential issues Next, make a list of any potential obstacles or challenges that might derail your progress. Do not skip this step by taking the time up front to brainstorm strategies on how you can either prevent these issues from occurring in the first place or resolve them quickly. Should they crop up, you'll have created a time buffer and improved your efficiency. Step 4 Create a timeline after completing the first few steps, you should have a clear idea of your project scope. Using this scope, you can create a project timeline that breaks down all the bigger tasks into smaller tasks that are involved in reaching your final objective. You can then give each of these smaller tasks an estimated time frame within the complete timeline to reach your final objective. This will give you a complete picture of all the project tasks and how much time each task has been allotted in the total project timeline. Step 5 Identify and eliminate time wasters this is one of the most important steps to help you manage your time and become more efficient. It is a step successful people have mastered while completing each task. Stay aware of activities or items that are taking up your precious time but are not moving your project forward. This could be things like answering irrelevant emails, spending time on social media accounts, or losing focus on your task timeline. Make sure you constantly review and reflect on each task as you're completing it to avoid allowing distractions to deviate you from the path of time efficiency at the end of the day. By understanding how Parkinson's Law works and implementing these five steps, you'll be able to shift time management in your favor to get more done in less time. Now the question today is now that you've learned about Parkinson's Law, how will you use this to manage your time more efficiently?
