The 10 step process to Solve Any Problem Stop talking about the problem and start thinking about the solution. Brian Tracy Problems are a fact of life. No matter what you do in life or how much you plan, there will always be problems to solve. By having a problem solving process in place though, you can make them less stressful and even use them as learning opportunities to help you further grow and find success in life. Next time you come across a problem in life, try approaching it with this clear 10 step process. Step one have a positive approach Problems will happen and may cause you to struggle a bit. Because of this, it is important to always have a positive attitude. Staying positive even in the face of adversity will help you keep a clear head and allow you to come up with a solution faster. Step 2 Define the problem Armed with your positive attitude, the next step is to identify and define the problem. You first need to know what you are solving. Make sure you separate the problem from the noise and secondary issues that surround it. Once you're clear on what the main problem is, it becomes easier to solve. Step 3 Think with creativity now that you've sourced the actual problem, identify why the problem arose in the first place. This will help you make sure it does not happen again. You might also want to look at how others have solved that problem before. If possible, that can give you valuable insight into your own problem. Step 4 Prepare for all Outcomes when looking at the outcomes of the problem, prepare for the best, the worst and everything in between. A problem is usually never only solved a single way. For example, the fastest way to solve a problem may not be the longest lasting solution or the longest lasting solution may not be the most efficient. By preparing for all outcomes and really thinking through your solutions, you'll be able to come up with the best possible long term solution. Step 5 Brainstorm Solutions the solution to a problem may not always be right in front of you, going hand in hand with. Step 4. Take this opportunity to brainstorm a variety of solutions without worrying if they are the best ones. Right off the bat, think of how others have solved this problem before. Consider alternatives look at the problem from all directions while keeping an open mind on how to solve it. Modify previous solutions and consider new options as the answer may be something you have never tried before. Get all the ideas out and written down even if they do not seem like good ones at the time. Do not leave anything on the table. Step 6 Decide on the Best Solution after working out solutions from all angles, consider which one is the best for the current situation. With the information you have available. This is usually the one that prevents the same problem from happening again while also addressing the current problem. Step 7 Set a deadline Parkinson's Law states that a task will expand to fill the time available for its completion. So if there is no deadline in place, the time to solve the problem will extend longer than it needs to be. Set a deadline and work within those time limits to solve the problem. Step 8 Take responsibility. Even if you are not the cause of the problem, you are responsible to help solve it. Focus your energy on finding a solution instead of looking for someone else to blame. Own it and make it a priority to solve. Step nine Solve the problem. Use all the steps you have completed from clarifying the problem to brainstorming solutions and gauging all possible outcomes to actually work on solving the problem. Do this in a way that will avoid having the problem come back while working within the deadline you set out. Step 10 Keep track of your results. Once you have solved the problem, your job does not stop there. It is still important to track the success of the solution to ensure that it was indeed the best one. By reflecting on the outcome, you can ensure that no other issues arise from that problem and you can use this insight to help solve future problems. By using this 10 step problem solving process, you can take any problem and work towards a solution. You'll have a plan in place to help you solve problems faster while learning from them so that you'll be able to solve future problems. With the insights you have gained by being able to solve problems better and faster, you'll be able to achieve higher levels of personal and professional success.
