Brian Tracy's talk "The Winning Edge Concept" argues that your earning ability (earning power) is your most valuable financial asset and that continuous, lifelong improvement is the primary way to increase it. He explains the "winning edge"—top performers are slightly better at critical skills—and gives practical habits (read 30–60 minutes daily, listen to educational audio programs, attend seminars/workshops, seek advice from successful people) and anecdotal examples to show how one skill or idea can transform a career.

Hello, I'm Brian Tracy and I want to talk to you about something that's very important. And it has to do with what is called your earning ability or what economists call your earning power. This is your ability to get results that people will pay you for. And it's the most valuable financial asset you have. Now, an asset is something that can be appreciating going up in value or depreciating going down in value. And the rule is that if you're not getting better, you're getting worse. So staying ahead of the curve in terms of knowledge and skill in your business is essential to your earning ability. You know that in every field, the top 20% of people earn 80% of the money. Well, I've studied the top 20% for many years. And one quality that they all have is, is what is called continuous and never ending improvement. We call it canine C A, N E I is. They're always looking for ideas and possibilities to grow and get better. There is a concept called the winning edge concept which says that people who at the top of their fields are just a little bit better, they have the winning edge in the critical skills in those fields. I have trained more than 5 million people in 65 countries and I've had people come back to me over the years and say one skill added to their existing skill base transformed their life forever. They did not know how to get appointments, or they did not know how to negotiate, or they did not know how to hire people or build teams, or they didn't know how to close sales. One skill can transform your life. So if I were to give anybody a piece of advice, it would be to dedicate yourself to lifelong personal and professional improvement. Now, how do you do that? Well, just like you bathe and you exercise, you breathe in and you breathe out. Your whole life must be a process of learning. When you get up in the morning, read something worthwhile that helps you to do your job better. As you travel around, listen to educational audio programs in your car or on your smartphone. One of the things I found is that educational audio programs are life transforming. They literally have taken people from rags to riches. Sometimes one audio program, if it's the right one on the right subject for you at that time, will change your life forever. I've worked with people who are almost living in their cars, who now live in big homes on the hill and have beautiful lives because of audio listening. Attend every seminar or workshop that you can, especially given by experts, people who have years of experience. One idea a friend of mine told me of going to a seminar, and he got one idea at one session in that seminar that made him one of the wealthiest men in his industry. From that day 31 years ago to today, he has made more money every year consistently in 31 businesses than he ever dreamed possible with one idea. So when you're learning and growing, not only do you feel great about yourself, but you feel tremendous personal power. You become more and more valuable. Your earning ability keeps getting higher and higher because you have more knowledge and skills that enable you to get better results that people will pay you for. So start today and begin to read 30 to 60 minutes a day. Turn off the television, shut off your technical devices, your computer and your smartphone, and just read and learn. Listen, go to courses, ask for the best advice from the most successful people in your field, and just make it a lifelong habit to continually take in new information. It's the great secret of success. It's the great secret of becoming one of the highest earning people in your field and taking complete control of your financial life.
