Brian Walch argues managers should stop telling employees what to do and start supporting their choices instead. Rather than prescribing a career path, managers provide a map and resources while employees identify their own next steps and take ownership of their growth.

One of the things that managers face when they are helping employees is the pressure and the expectation that they now must guide their employees and advise their employees on their career. Shifting that focus a little bit, we can actually change it so that instead of the manager providing guidance, they can provide support. In order to do that, the employee needs to start taking ownership for where they want to develop their career and what responsibilities they want to take on. So we provide a framework so that the manager can provide a map for the employee, and the employee can decide what steps they want to take to move forward in their career. This allows the manager to move in a supportive role while the employee drives their career forward.
