Hi. Hey, Orkund. Thank you for finding time to talk to me before your trip to your hometown, Ankara. So tonight, can you just tell us a little bit about what we talked on just over there in the middle of the sea when you were swimming a couple of days ago. Can you introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about your future plans? Of course. The floor is yours.
I'm Orkund, I'm 18 years old from Ankara, Turkey capital city. My plans are leave the country for college. I want to go far away from here, kinda find a college for myself. I'm gonna go there, I'm gonna study just by myself. New life, new town, new language, new cultures. I mean, it's a risk, but it's gonna be good for me.
I'm sure it is. It's beautiful as everybody can see. Yeah, it's full moon. It is at the beautiful Aegean coast here.
Yeah, exactly.
Aren't you gonna miss this?
I'm gonna miss so, so bad. But I should take the risk for my future. Normally I don't want to leave, I don't want to go away, but I should go.
So you will country, your friends, your family. Exactly, everybody, everything. Why are you leaving?
Why I'm leaving? There's like three basic things. The bad education system, bad economy.
And.
Then because of the bad government.
So I am more interested in the.
Second one, the economy.
The economy. How does the economy affect you when you are here? You're a teenager. Can you tell us a little bit about exactly?
I can.
What is your experience here?
So the economy in Turkey is going so bad right now because of the current things. The thing is like I'm teenager, I'm having with my friends, drinking beer, having fun. We are in summer right now. Summer vibes, they are just playing volleyball with the beers. Like that's normal things for the teenager. But the thing is one, one beer of bottle of beer is like 30 Turkish lira. Like, it's so expensive, so expensive. Everything is so expensive. Breads are so expensive, water is so expensive. That's, that's why I want to go. Because I want to live like a normal teenager. That's. That's so hard to live here if you are not rich. If you're like normal family like me, my family is like normal Turkish family. If you're not rich, you can live in Turkey, like good way, in a good way. That's the thing.
Welcome to one of my first virtual reality economics lectures. You just met a teenager from Turkey, Orkut. Like any other teenager, he's full of hope and potential. But you also heard that Orkunt was not happy and he was worried about his future. The reason is economics. And in this lecture series I want to take you behind the graphs and the numbers and equations and show you how economics impacts the lives of many people, teenagers and elderly people, people from all kinds of demographics. But first we're going to focus on why Orkund wants to live his home country. The answer is very simple. Turkey has been experiencing a very high level of inflation since about a year, year and a half. It has been increasing very fast and around November of 2022 it reached 80%, 8, 0 and continue to increase. This impacts the lives of everybody, including and maybe especially fixed income, lower income parts of the demographics and also teenagers like orkids. And if you stay with me, I will show you why and how economics makes such a big impact in everybody's lives. Thank you.
