Amplify What Makes You Happy: Looking At The Big Picture w/ Matt Fichtner #FreedomFastLane
11 Dec 2025 · 10 min
Matt Fichtner warns that scaling a business amplifies everything about it, including unhappiness. He walks through the path from earning independence to deciding what you actually want, and explains why security alone doesn't build stable nations: people need economic opportunity and ownership, not just handouts.

Build a business, invest the profits. I'm Ryan Daniel Moran and this is Freedom Fast Lane.
Hey, Team Ryan here. And you're about to hear a clip from a recent event that I held at my home. I sometimes invite entrepreneurs and investors and audience leaders into my home to go through a curriculum I put together called Eight Figure Exits. It's about building companies to sell. And you can find out more about that@capitalism.com 8. If you are building a business or if you've got an audience or you're looking to invest in businesses, this is my overall strategy for building sellable companies. And while we were there, there was an attendee whose name is Matthew. And Matthew talked a little bit about business and he talked a little bit about what he got out of the event. But we then talked about his experience as a veteran, his experience in the military, and how that gave him a little bit of a different view on the world that some people experience if they've never had that before. And I just thought this was worth sharing because we all live in our own little bubbles. We all live in our own little slice of the world. And I'm always fascinated to hear how an entrepreneur, successful entrepreneur, who has seen a different view of the world views it differently than some other people. So this is a perspective that you don't hear in the media and you don't hear most people talk about. So I just thought it was worth sharing with the world and with you. So I hope you get something out of this kind of side chat that I had at my home with my buddy Matthew.
All right, Matt.
All the ways from.
San Diego, but soon to be Austin.
So I know it's preeminent, but I love recruiting people to move to Austin, Texas.
Cheers.
So tell me about the last day and a half. What's happening to your brain explosions.
It's a cool community to be in because you realize there are a thousand paths to get to ABS.
Absolutely.
The hardest thing is defining what success means to you.
Yeah.
And that has been like the big thing this week.
I honestly, I was a little afraid you didn't like me yesterday.
How so?
Well, because. Because we put so much.
I came to your course off of an email. The first thing, Well, I mean, I ever bought out of an email was coming to this.
Well, I think, I think it. I appreciate that. I. I think it was. I think you were saying that you expected the path from like 1 or 2 to 10 to be a little bit more predictable. And we spent a lot of time yesterday, a good hour, hour and A half going over, like, what the hell you want?
Because the path is determined on what you want.
And there was, I think, some resistance to that idea when we were talking about it. And I could see the like, no, it's supposed to be more formulaic than this. And it is.
It is.
As soon as you know what it.
Is that you want.
And that's the hard work.
Which is the ironic part about that, is I spent a large portion of.
My military career training people how to.
Work from the objective backwards. And only when you know the final.
Objective can you come up with the.
Correct tactics to get you all the.
Way to the end.
And then as soon as I go to entrepreneur mode, I completely threw that out the window. And I'm just like, tactic, tactic, tactic, tactic.
Oh, yeah.
You're the first person to ask, what is the objective?
I'm like, oh, my God, how can.
I not remember that? This is exactly what I used to teach.
I mean, I obsess over that question because I know that not answering that first has caused me a lot of pain. I mean, the idea of building something without knowing what you want means that you scale on happiness, scale unhappiness.
So unpack that for me.
Sure.
So if you are. It's kind of like if you are going to a job that you hate and you decide that you want to go from 40 hours a week to 80 hours a week, do you get happier or less happy, but you're making more money. Yeah, but it doesn't matter. At some point you break because you have now amplified something that didn't make you happy.
Right.
And a lot of entrepreneurs start businesses because they want the money so they can live a better life. They start making money in spite of the fact that they're in a business that they don't really love. And that's okay. It's usually step one, but once you.
Have step one is breaking free.
Yeah. Yeah.
Having.
Having a way to make money on your own.
Yeah.
That is not connected to a job. Step two, we now have to go. Okay, kudos. Now what do you want? And most people are like, no, just give me more of what I'm not happy with. What? Right. And so. And so what if you don't solve that after you've broken free a little bit, then you end up scaling on happiness and you. And you will break.
And it only happens 100% of the time.
Yeah.
And I think that was probably one of the biggest challenges and kind of accomplishments of this weekend is watching looking around the table and watching everybody's mind.
Kind of break a little bit.
And you're like, I thought business one that I made a million dollars off of, that was the path.
And everybody was like, is it, do.
I want to, like, morph business 1 into business 1A, or do I want to, as you said yesterday, let business one slowly and profitably die?
Yeah.
Die a slow and profitable death while.
Business two, which is my real passion, I can steal those skills away from that and, and put that into something else.
Yeah.
What did you learn most from.
From.
Traveling the world in nation building wars?
I. I mean, I think with the kind of. What we started on was, was what I learned a lot. I think we're fighting a battle that can't be won the way that we're fighting it. I think what those people want and what any people want and crave is a better life for themselves that they can create for themselves. And handouts are not the opportunity for that. Security is for sure. You have to create a secure space for people to work in.
Are you talking about in Afghanistan specifically?
I mean, that's my framework. That's my personal.
This is fascinating. So what I'm hearing you say is that. Forgive me, interrupt me if I'm putting words in your mouth, but the idea that the idea of nation building is actually creating a culture of dependency. Is that what you're saying?
No, no, not necessarily. I think we're seeking a military solution to a.
Problem that.
I think capitalism is a better. I mean, that's it, you know, you know, promote the capitalism.com brand.
I know you're like, yes, capitalism.
But I think if you can say freedom, sure.
Freedom and opportunity, I think is what people need there. Interesting thing is actually the northern half of the country actually does have a lot of business, a lot of freedom and a lot of opportunity. Southern half of the country, a lot of that was driven by, you know, the terrorist cells and, and the Taliban and ISIS over the years and things like that. But, but we're all, we're. All we're there doing is, is fighting the enemy, which you have to have the security, but it doesn't do anything if the young people, especially young men, if you have no opportunity, then you just cling to this gang culture because the gang, the Taliban, the isis, the whichever gang it is that's controlling at the time is a very attractive option if you have no other options.
If you have no way to provide.
For yourself or family, grow a legitimate future, you cling to the power, powerful group that's in charge at the time. That just happens to be this rotating group of terrorists, of terrorist entities.
That mob mentality can be a route out if you have no other options. I mean, we could, we could say this across the board from those who demand, who are the new form of capital or the new form of socialism. You could say this to the stereotypical Trump supporter that is like, you know, rallies around, getting angry. You could say for anyone who follows like a mob type of mentality of if you, if you feel hopeless, yes, any rope will do. Yes, any way out will do.
Hopelessness is a very, very dangerous thing. So I think the best, the best thing that you can provide a group of hopeless, dangerous, violent people is opportunity for the, for the future. And I think, I think embedded in us all, you know, opportunity for the future is an opportunity to do what you want in life and provide for yourself and for your family. If that doesn't exist, you basically have anarchy, you basically have chaos. And I think that's, that's. And I think that happens a lot in extreme socialist, communist kind of countries is the government takes that away.
They're like, you don't have the opportunity.
We tell you what the opportunity is, right? And then people feel helpless. Even though the government theoretically is providing.
For you by gathering all the assets.
And evenly distributing them, if you don't have personal ownership in that, you still feel hopeless. Even if you have a universal basic income or a minimum level of security or financial security guaranteed, you still feel hopelessness. So there's still unrest, there's still the system that isn't congruent with, I think, who we are as human beings. And I think that's the problem with anything, man.
