This would be a great business for you.
Yeah.
Then you'd enjoy it.
I've had this discussion and, you know, I just didn't push the button on this a few years ago.
Yeah, I think this is where you need to go.
Yeah, it's helpful. Thank you.
Go, dude. Build a business. Invest the profits.
I'm Ryan Daniel Moran and this is Freedom Fast Lane.
Hey, fastlaners. This is another podcast from the capitalism.com advice booth we set up at FlynnCon in San Diego, hosted by Pat Flynn. In this short talk, Ryan identifies Douglas passion after feeling a bit burnt out and not knowing where to go next. En.
You know, you might be interested. Well, I'll give you a quick majority about my background. I don't have a business now. I'm 67. I retired in 2011.
Great for 67, by the way.
Thank you very much. And.
So I have a degree in biochemistry and business from Cornell and I got off track. I was a ballet dancer in my teens and actually modern dancer morphed into ballet and I was a ballet dancer, although shitty ballet dancer for. So I waited and bartended for a year.
For.
Till I was. Till 1980. And then I took a job. It just occurred to me, I'm being videoed in. The nerves kicked in a little bit.
It's not there.
So in 1980, I went to Wall Street. I was in equity sales for 20 years, mostly with Lehman Brothers. I got my CFA, which you know about it, the CFA. So I'm no longer a CFA because I'm not in. I left the industry.
In 2001 and I went to our family dairy business. And with four cousins. Well, three cousins and a father, it was a horror story. I ran our family dairy business. It was about an $80 million sales rep business. So headquartered in New York City and manufacturing plant. We resourced from 200. Excuse me, 300, 400 farmers between Albany and Syracuse. I did that for 10 years. In 2011, I quit. And one of the highlights between then and now is I was on the advisory council for entrepreneurship at Cornell. They have a great entrepreneurship program. So I got to be around a lot of startups and. But different from what they're talking about in here.
Sure.
And I became aware of Pat in 2015. I always wanted to pull the trigger and do something in online sales.
So I'm in ideation now and I kind of don't have a clue.
How can we help?
I don't know. I'll.
Just Tell me what you're trying to do.
Yeah, well, I'm Trying to.
You know, the first thing that comes to mind is to make money. But, you know, when you, when you read about, obviously there are lots of ways of making money, but I like the idea of being my own boss. And I had an ethical burnout. I left out that I had a burnout on Wall Street. And along the way I suffered depression and OCD and.
Terrible insomnia. So I've had ups and downs.
So what do you want to happen?
Well, I want to.
Generate cash flow. I want to be involved in stuff that sustains my interest. For example, in 2015, well, I started going to a lot of meetups and traveling and meeting people in the radical life extension space. Do you know who Ray Kurzweil is? Have you read Age of Spiritual Machines?
I have not, but I'm familiar with Ray's work.
Yeah. So, you know, and if you look.
Like this at 67, I'm already interested in what you have to sell.
Thanks. Thanks very much.
So I'm actually, I'm just going to pause here because if this isn't. This is your interest right now.
That's one of my interests.
And how long has this been an interest of yours?
You know, it's been an interest on and off. So, you know, I said I'm a biochemist and I, I have a lot of interest in health and science and, and future, future disruptive technologies. So kind of been an interest for a lot of my life.
Do you do the biohacking side of it?
You know, I, I was involved in a meetup group where I, where I had speakers in that, in that landscape. Come and speak.
So do you personally?
No, no, I don't.
Do you personally eat any specific way for longevity?
Yeah, I do. I, I, well, I transitioned to a vegan diet recently, and so I do.
That was recently.
Two months ago.
Okay, so just an observation, you look like this at 67 and you felt the need to change something.
Yeah, yeah. Well, yeah, okay, well, because I, Because I've yo. Yoed, you know, and.
Okay, well, anywho, where I'm going with this is. I think this is your, like, I don't need to hear anything else. This is the niche that you should be going in. You look the part, you can speak the part, you'll host meetups about the part. Yeah, you're the avatar. Because people who are, you are healthier and in better shape than most people in their 40s.
Thank you.
So people who are in their 40s who are looking for a turnaround are going, oh, 70 doesn't look so bad if he looks like that. He looks better than I do at 42. And so you're immediately an authority in that space, which gives you a leg up. Right. So. And, like, I can. I'm looking at your energy. You're kind of pumped about this area.
Yeah.
So this is where you need to go.
Yeah.
Right. And this means hosting meetups, doing interviews with people on the topic, sharing your journey of, like, how long do you want to live?
Well, I want to live as long as I can, but it's not just.
Do you have a number?
No, I don't. As long as I. As long as I. But it's about quality of life, and that's. That's why I don't like. Like retirement.
So. So.
My.
Just.
I'm going on a hunch, as I often do, which is you need to have some way of framing. Framing the journey, which is like the. The good 100.
Right.
Because people always say, I want to live to be 100, but I want to be blank. I want to still be this, this, and this. Nobody wants to be a vegetable at 100. That's what everybody says. So if you can frame it as living to 100 and living a great life through 100.
I own the URL. I own the URL. Livelongerlikeme.com.
Do you know patients like me?
No.
So you want to hear about it?
I don't know. I'm really confused by your hook right now. Live longer like me. Doesn't strike me.
It doesn't.
You own the URL, but you're not doing anything other, right? No.
No. Okay.
This is your fresh start. Looking for your next opportunity. Right. So we're in just idea spinning mode. Right. You need to be doing content about longevity and interviewing longevity experts, and that needs to be your market. And you need to be documenting your own journey about what you're doing and experimenting with. Because everybody else in the market who is doing this is 40 or younger. There is no one serving the 40 and overcrowd. Except for maybe Peter Attia. Yeah, Peter Attia a little bit, because he's over 40.
But he's not doing podcasts, is he?
Oh, yeah, he's doing a ton. Yeah. But his. His market is mostly younger people. There is no Mark. There's no one serving the over 40 crowd in the. Like, you thought your best days were behind you, but they're actually ahead of you.
Yeah.
And I think that's. I think that's your. That's your shtick. Like, I mean, if if you look the way you do now at 70, man, you got a great foothold on the marketplace.
Do you know Terry Hoffman?
No.
That's his doctor in Golden In.
Whose doctor? Peter.
Peter Thiels. Yeah.
Okay. Yeah, sorry, I'm not saying Peter Attiel. Peter Attia.
Oh, I don't know who that is.
Okay, Peter Attia.
Well, you can look him up, but he is a T I a T, T I A. So if you're the Tim Ferriss for people over 40, dude, you got a really cool business and here's why. Again, you look at the part, you'll love the part. But those people are willing to spend a lot more money than, than me. Who is. I spend a lot of money to like have my, my blood panels analyzed, to have my. Oh, yeah, like, I mean, my biohacking stack is pretty extensive. Right. I spend a lot. I probably spend 25 grand a year on biohacking and longevity.
What specifically do do you do?
I mean, my diet is pretty dialed in. Metformin, I take.
CJC.
Ipomoralin.
I take BPC.
Was it 15? 157. BBC 157. I have a very specific supplement stack.
I have a specific way of training for longevity.
Am I going to get this video?
So, so, like, I probably spend 25 grand a year on biohacking and longevity. And I'm not. And I'm in, I'm in prevention mode.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
The person who is 45 and their health is suffering. They're in recovery mode.
Yes.
They're willing to spend as much as me, if not more.
Yeah. Well, you look great and obviously you work at.
I'm actually 68 years old.
What's your sport?
Lifting heavy things?
Yeah, that's my sport. And running?
No, though. No, used to be.
Where did you get your tan?
I live on the lake.
Whereabouts?
In Austin, Texas.
Nice. Yeah, nice.
So, so all this to say, this is your market and I, I. When you sat down, you were in a good mood, but you were in your head trying to think of what the opportunity was. And as soon as I said no other idea, let's talk about this. You just like freed up all this energy and you and you got excited.
Yep.
As soon as you mentioned Ray Kurzweil, you were like, it was clear that this was your jam and you look the part. So it's just, this is where, this is where you need to focus, appreciate. You need to be the guy who helps people over 40 dance their way to 100.
Yeah, yeah.
It's interesting.
Do you have grandkids?
I do not. Unfortunately. We didn't have grand. Well, I have nephews.
Yeah.
No grandkids yet. No grand nephews.
That might be why you look so great at 67.
So there's. There's a lot of.
People in their 40s and 50s. Let's just say people in their 50s are starting to think about grandkids.
Yeah.
And so they're starting to have this shift of, am I going to be healthy enough to enjoy my grandkids? That's a big pain point. Am I going to live to see my grandkids or not?
Yeah.
And enter you, who can turn the whole life around with content and making recommendations.
This would be a great business for you.
Yeah.
Then you'd enjoy it.
I've had this discussion and, you know, I just didn't push the button on this a few years ago.
Yeah. I think this is where you need to go.
Yeah, it's helpful. Thank you.
Cool, dude.
Okay, chat. Wish you the best of luck.
Thank you very much. You too.
And, you know, True Confessions. I wasn't aware of you when I came.
That's fine.
And most people weren't. Most people weren't here.
No.
What's your. What's your audience?
You know, we have the biggest following among. In the. In the e commerce area, so. But I've been on Pat's podcast a couple times and.
Those episodes did really well, but they were several years ago, so I wanted to come back in the community.
Yeah. You have a terrific speaking voice.
Thank you very much.
Yeah.
Appreciate it.
Obviously, you're camera friendly. Thank you.
So if you'd like, I can speak in podcast voice for the rest of this time.
Hey, team, real quick, Shameless plug here. If you've ever seen my company logo for capitalism.com, it's a red sea with a flame at the end. And the reason why that's the company logo is because I believe that our purpose as a company and my purpose as a leader is to light other fires. And that means creating content for entrepreneurs who go on to build great companies, Working with entrepreneurs to help them break through their plateaus and to invest in companies that really have a shot. But breaking out teaching this stuff so that more success stories get created. I like to light fires. That's what I'm here to do. One of the ways that I do that is inside of our monthly membership, which is called the 1%. And inside there, we send out a monthly newsletter which features case studies of success stories. And we feature business ideas that you can literally rip off and steal. We often even just throw keyword lists at at you and say go for it. Hey, we might even invest in this post. In the community you'll probably find an investor too. And the idea is to bring together investors, entrepreneurs, influencers in one place where we can light fires really, really quickly. We also have a year long curriculum that is made to help you build businesses, invest the profits, increase your profits, create the change you want to see in the world. You can't not change as a result of going through this. So you can find out more@capitalism.com 1 if you've been listening to the podcast and you're missing community, you're missing opportunity, you're missing connection, you're missing being a part of a movement that is going to make you a better entrepreneur.
