I Had It Backward: Here's What Really Matters #FreedomFastLane
11 Dec 2025 · 17 min
Ryan Daniel Moran shifted his company's quarterly meetings to focus on one unified priority instead of individual metrics. The change sparked harder conversations, stronger alignment, and personal transformations on his team. He argues meaningful work and community matter more than money, which tends to follow purpose anyway.

It's all about what we want to be rather than what we achieve.
Build a business, invest the profits. I'm Ryan Daniel Moran, and this is Freedom Fastlane.
Hey, I hope you'll forgive me. I'm driving right now, and I'm just on my phone, and I know it's not the best audio, but I'll do my best to make it worth it. I'm just coming out. I'm driving home to driving from my lake house, which is where we hold workshops and retreats. And I just had my quarterly meeting with the team@capitalism.com.
And I am exhausted in a good way. Like, it's that good kind of exhausted.
And the reason was, holy crap.
The thing that happened in the last couple of days was.
Actually just personal transformations.
I made the decision to experiment with a couple of things this quarter.
Moving forward, and I just communicated them to the team. And.
My intent behind these experiments was to create more of a team element.
With everybody on the team@capitalism.com because.
I don't know if this is true with all companies or all entrepreneurs, but in our company, there's this tendency to.
Get clarity and then go off into our own little silo and work away and.
Coordinate with members as little as possible.
And it's just really slowed us down. And when I was in New York City meeting with Gary Vaynerchuk, I just noticed that the. The organization was buzzing with collaboration and community, and people worked until 6, 7 at night, excitedly. So.
And my perception was they felt part of something. They were up to something. They were building something. I just got that sense when I was there. And so I started to think about, okay, how do we create more comradery and more teamwork and more partnership@capitalism.com so there were little things, like.
Instead of having each person report on what they're up to this week, report on what we call their one thing, why don't we make it more team focused? You know, this. This group of three people.
That. That department is going to report on what they're up to. And that was a first piece, and that was cool. And it created some partnership among the different members of the team. But there was a lot of alignment behind how the different pieces work together. So my content creator, C Money, as we call them, gave me a piece of feedback once where he said, you know, a lot of times we create these quarterly objectives, and they're a lot like goals, and they're a lot like benchmarks, and if we don't hit them, we feel bad. And if we do Hit them, we feel good.
And then we move on and pick new goals. And so instead I took the approach of saying, all right, well, instead of that, let's just set what we as a company need to get done this quarter. And what that did is it freed up every. All of our resources and our energy to focus on what the company needs to get done together, what we need to do together to move the ball forward in order to build the vision that we have for capitalism dot com.
But what happened as a result of that was.
Kind of mind boggling. And so here's what happened when we got really super clear on.
What we need to do. So, like our company, one thing was we needed to have a consistent, unified sales message for our core product and then have all content, all resources, all marketing align behind that.
So now all of a sudden, we are all depending on one another, were all feeding into the same vision, mission message. So it created a support structure, it created an alignment behind that, which makes me dependent on someone else on the team and makes them dependent on other person on the team.
So the result of that.
Was unifying behind a mission, but also some really hard conversations.
Like one team member going to another team member and saying, I don't feel like I can rely on you in this way.
And somebody else saying, you know, I run to the corner and isolate myself and I need your help.
Addressing that if we're all gonna go in this direction.
And oh, my goodness, the things that happened.
Made me realize that.
Man, I wish you could see my face. We're all, first of all, desiring to be a part of a team. We're all desiring to be part of a community that connects with an aligned vision. And how much excitement, how much joy, and also how much healing happens when we finally feel a part of that.
I recorded a podcast of my marketing director, Sean.
And in it, we talked about the vision and the mission that companies need in order to align customers behind something and how it could be used for good or for bad. Religions use it.
Organizations use it, charismatic leaders use it. But what happened for us when we had it was that the whole team rallied together and that forced.
It forced hard conversations, and it forced people to collaborate. And it felt really good. It felt really, again, healing for a lot of people.
You know, I have this theory, and maybe it's just one of those things where it happened to me. So I feel like this is.
This is.
The way I see the world, but I kind of have this feeling that in today's world, because we all live behind screens, because we all are isolated from one another. We live in high rises. We lack community. And so the pressure to.
Perform, the pressure to create, the pressure to provide is all on us. It's all on.
Our own shoulders. So.
You know, we have to become things that we don't want to be in order to survive.
It's.
We get out of alignment with our natural state because we have to. Because we have to survive. And that is just exhausting. You know, we're made to be in partnership with one another. The world has basically.
Built for us to depend on one another, and we don't.
And we don't even know that we're disconnected until we're exhausted, tired, burnt out.
And. And the funny thing was, as soon as.
As soon as Sean bought in, right? Me going through the vision and the mission and the message, as soon as Sean bought in.
Inez really bought in. And I might be getting out of order. But then when that happened, then Chris really bought in. And as a result, it was just like eventually, everybody really bought in. It felt so good to just be.
On a ragtag team of misfits who were running down the field with a mission. Felt really good.
And that, to me, felt like what made it about the process and not just about the result. And.
I'm obviously very fond of Gary Vaynerchuk because of the relationship that I have with him, at least, you know, once every couple years when I see him.
But.
I have a theory right now, just in this moment, that the struggle he had as a kid of.
Being an immigrant, having a younger brother, a mom who gave everything to him, and a father who was building a business, they probably felt like a ragtag team of misfits who were up against the world, building something that was probably really great. And now when I go into VaynerMedia.
That'S an individual who has built that type of an approach and a structure and a culture and a community at VaynerMedia, which is why he's accomplishing what he's accomplishing.
And it felt really good to be able to create a little bit of that for myself and my team.
And the really wonderful thing that I realized as a part of all that was just seeing that everything that we're doing, everything that we're doing is really about the personal journey. It's about the personal journey of.
The team members that I work with and their growth and my development as a leader and my ability to give them opportunities to grow as people. And.
There was a lot of positive business work that happened at this quarterly meeting.
But.
The real benefit, the real work.
Was from the.
Personal transformations that happened.
And sometimes we buy into the lie that what, what we're doing is for the result.
It's really about who we become.
And I don't like saying that.
Because I want the result, you want the result.
But even if you don't get it, you become something.
And that's really what we're after.
I was working with a client, a backroom member today, who expressed to me that.
He wants to feel purpose in his work.
And that he wants to feel meaning in his company. And that he wants to feel.
A vision behind once he wants to, wants to do something that matters.
And then in the next breath he said, and I want to have an eight figure business.
Great.
And I said, well, if you were doing something that mattered, if you were doing something that was purposeful, if you felt excited about your work, would it matter if this business was only a seven figure business?
No.
No, it wouldn't matter.
Freedom is the doing.
Huh?
And it's funny, then he said, well.
Man, with this vision I have, that could be a nine figure business. Yes, it could.
Would it matter if it was nine figures, eight figures, seven figures, ten figures, Would it matter? No.
What matters is for me to be proud of the work, excited about it.
That's what we're after.
And the funny thing is that.
That nine figure business or eight figure business really only happens when you feel excited about it, when you feel purpose behind it, when there's all the good stuff.
Dare I quote Jesus of Nazareth who.
Said, seek ye first the kingdom and.
His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you as well.
Seek ye first.
Which, by the way, I know.
I know some of you disagree with me, but I don't think he's talking about.
Heaven. I don't think Jesus is talking about.
Oh.
God's plan for you.
He's talking about.
The being of who you are.
Seek ye first. Seek ye first.
What matters?
Seek ye first. The purpose. Seek ye first.
The excitement and all that other stuff.
The money.
That comes later, that's added to you too, but it's not what matters. And we flip it. We seek ye first the money and say, then we'll figure out the excitement.
Huh?
So.
I just wanted to share that with you because I know some of you are listening, wondering what to do.
Wondering what to build.
And the truth is that it is all about who we become. It's all about the community we build. It's all about.
What we want to be. Rather than what we achieve.
So that was my lesson from the last couple of days. That was my lesson from investing in my team and realizing that as a result of.
Serving my team, creating a community and a culture among my team, that everything else is going to be added to us as well. I had it backwards. I had it backwards.
