The Best Investment You Can Make Over The Next 10 Years
11 Dec 2025 · 0 min
Podcast episode (Capitalism.com) featuring Ryan Daniel Moran arguing that the highest-return investment over a decade is rewiring your beliefs and going ‘all in’ on your business and convictions. Moran contrasts common hedging behavior (dollar-cost averaging, fear of loss) with the power of conviction to change actions, using personal anecdotes (started a business with $600 and sold it for $16M) and examples (Michael Saylor and bitcoin). The episode ends with resource links for books, community, and an incubator.

There's a scene in Austin Powers that tells you everything that you need to know about human behavior. The scene is when number two goes to Dr. Evil and tells him how to use their new time machine in order to make trillions of dollars. Number two says, Dr. Evil, why don't we use this time machine to be able to invest in the story stock market? We could make trillions of dollars if we know exactly what companies are going to go up. But instead, Dr. Evil decides to use nuclear weapons to hold the world hostage for $1 million. This scene tells you everything that you need to know about human behavior and why people don't get rich. If you think about yourself 10 years ago and all the things that you wish that you had done, all the things that you wish that you had invested in, you wish that you had bought bitcoin. You wish that you had bought Apple stock or Ethereum or S&P 500 index funds for goodness sake, or started that business 10 years ago that you wish that you were doing right now or just gotten around different people or married that person. If you think about all the things that you wish that you had done 10 years ago, you are probably not doing them now. And what I want to do in this lesson is rewire that so that you actually start doing the things that ten years from now you will look back and say, thank God, goodness, the ten year younger version of myself did that thing because it made me rich in the future. I was talking to somebody at my house. I hold workshops at my home every once in a while. And somebody asked me, what advice do you wish you could give the version of you that was 10 years younger? And I jokingly said, buy Bitcoin because 10 years ago, you know, I'd be up like 100,000x or whatever it is. And then I said this. Actually, you know what? Had even bigger returns than bitcoin? Starting my own business. Because I started my last business with $600 and I sold it for $16 million. And you know what I wish I had done when I started my business? I wish I had put in more than $600. Why didn't I put in more than $600? Because I didn't know if it was going to work. Because I didn't fully believe that that was the thing that was going to make me financially free forever. But had I known that, I would have gone much more aggressively than I did back in 2013. This is true for most of the decisions that we make. We hedge ourselves by not going all in on the businesses and the investments that we sort of think are going to work, but are absolutely certain are going to work. The truth is, if the older version of yourself came and visited you 10 years ago and said you should buy bitcoin, you probably still would not take that advice. Maybe you would have said, well, maybe I could reserve like $500 a month to put into bitcoin or Apple or whatever investment you believe in. You probably would have maybe dollar cost averaged in or put a little bit in here and there. But if you're like most people, then you would have waited for a drop and as soon as things went down, you would have been like, well, maybe I could get it cheaper. And then when it went up, you're like, I missed the boat. Because this is what most of us do with the opportunities staring us in the face. Even though a lot of us believe that the stock market will be higher 10 years from now than it is today, very few of us actually invest for the long term. If you believe that bitcoin is going to a million, you still probably aren't putting in everything you can into that investment. Now, of course, that may not be financially wise to go all in on one thing, but it says a lot about human behavior that we constantly hedge our bets and that we don't go full throttle into the things that could make us financially free. And the best example of this is our own businesses. So many of my students and so many of you who watch my videos have not gone fully in to your business because you're not sure that it's going to work. But. But it's that not sure that it's going to work that prevents it from actually happening. If the future you visited you today and said, hey, that business that you're thinking about that is going to make $100 million go all in right now, how would you change your behavior right now? Would you doubt that next decision and say, is this going to take me to $100 million or is this the wrong decision? Or would you just say, future me said it's going to be $100 million? Well, I'm going to go all in. And when something fails, do you beat yourself up over it? Or do you dust yourself off and you go, look, I already know I'm going to make $100 million, so I just got to figure out the next thing that's going to get me closer. But here's the thing. You can wire yourself to do that now and thus manipulate the outcome in the future. Take two possible outcomes 1 is that you're homeless, living under a bridge, and the other is that you sell a company for $100 million. Both of these scenarios are equally true and equally false, and because they haven't happened yet. But whatever you believe to be more likely is how you are going to wire yourself to act in the future. If you think that being homeless, living under a bridge is more likely, then you will be conservative in how you play business. You won't go all in. You will hedge your bets financially. You won't hire that person. You won't run that ad. You'll be conservative in how much product you order for your next launch. You, you will basically play to not lose rather than play to win. Because the story that you've got in your brain is about living under a bridge and how I don't want that to happen. Take the other reality, though, where you sell a business for $100 million. If you believe that that is going to happen, then do you play more full out? Do you decide to take that strategic risk knowing that if it doesn't work out, you're going to be fine? When things don't go the way that you think they're going to, do you beat yourself up or do you go, we'll figure it out next time? Well, most entrepreneurs are actually hedging because they're trying not to be homeless rather than playing to win. Case in point, when you fail, you beat yourself up over it. When something doesn't go your way, you think of yourself as a loser. When you look at other people's success stories, you. You see them and go, oh, they have it figured out, but I'll never be that successful. These are all the stories that we have hardwired into our brain. And by the way, I only know because I've wrestled with this stuff too. I've just worked through it and come out the other side, and now I'm in full throttle sprint towards what I want rather than trying to avoid what I don't want. So how do you make that transition? The first is realizing that if you lose it all, it's not that bad. The worst thing that happens when you lose it all, because I've done it twice, is that your ego gets hurt. Nobody cares what your net worth is except for you. Nobody cares about your past failures except for you. You. And how you think about your failures and your successes changes how you show up in the present, and that is actually when all the work gets done. The second is realizing you're going to die. And it's not going to matter anyway. At the end of your life, you're going to disappear and people will stop talking about you, so you can stop caring about them, talking about you now, and just do the thing that you want to do. And the third is understanding that in the quantum field of reality, all possibilities are equally true in the future. So you might as well just pick the one that feels empowering, the one that feels exciting and and train yourself into believing that. And you can rewire yourself to take the actions that are in alignment with the story that you want to be true, rather than the disempowering story that most people have their entire lives run by. I did a full podcast episode with Stacey Bayman that I would encourage you to go watch. She talks about how when she was making almost no money, she rewired her brain into seeing the opportunities and coaching herself and into the empowering beliefs that allowed her to take the actions that created the result that she wanted. As my friend Brooke Castillo says, our thoughts create our emotions and our emotions are responsible for the actions that we take and our actions are what create our results. So if you want to change the results that you are getting, you change the thoughts and the feelings that you consistently practice. That's how you give your body and your brain permission to to take consistent action towards the result that you want. Most of us want to just change the habit or change the action without changing the feeling or the thought. But that's when self sabotage kicks in because our old patterns and our habits of thought come in. And then we go back to the default state of doing the same dumb things that we've done for years, giving us the same result that we've always gotten wondering why everybody else is passing us just for fun. I give you permission to use me as the message from the future that the thing that you want to happen just happens. You want to have that successful business. There are plenty of people in the future who made way more money than you could ever dream. So you might as well just rest in the knowing that what you want to do is totally possible and achievable. And then train yourself into the belief that that that is possible for you so that you take the actions necessary to do it. Can you pretend that the future you came back and said that idea that you've been sitting on, it works out beautifully. So go full out and full throttle towards it. Because here's the weird thing that will happen. If you believe it, you will take the actions that make it so. Our beliefs create our reality. Because if you believe that something is going to happen, you will make it so. A great example of this is Michael Saylor. Michael Saylor is the biggest evangelist for bitcoin in the world. He got famous by borrowing billions of dollars, putting it all into bitcoin, then borrowing against that, buying more bitcoin, and then doing it one more time. And then he went on hundreds of podcasts talking about the fact that he was all in on bitcoin, and he was so convicted about it that other people started to buy it. And despite the fact that he's down on his investment and has lost billions of dollars, he maintains his conviction, which continues to keep people in the market and will probably create an amazing return in the future, as long as he doesn't doubt what he's done in the past and undo the whole thing. Conviction is the greatest sales tool in the planet. It is the greatest motivating factor on the planet. If you really believe something and feel convicted about it to the point that you would sacrifice everything for it, that is when it actually becomes real. Because other people start to line up to support you. The customers that want that vision start to back your thing. The investors who want to bet on the next thing say, this guy is so convicted, I can't not support him. It's your belief and your conviction that that changes the action and the reality that exists for you. In religions, we are most persuaded by the people who are willing to die for their beliefs. Because if someone is willing to give their life for something, then there must be something true to it. And in your life, are you willing to give up the shitty job or the business that pays the bills, or the thing that you don't want to do anymore because you're so in belief on what you want to create? Because if you are, then nothing can stop you. We love to say that if we knew that any investment was going to the moon, that we put everything into it. So why not make it the thing that you want to go big? Why not make it the business that you're working on? Why not just decide that the thing that you want to exist in the world is the thing that you're going to go all in on and. And create that reality? Because when you have that amount of conviction, that's when you get the investors, the customers, the partners, the followers, and everything else that you need to make that real. But it starts with your belief and your conviction. So can you train yourself to believe that what you want to be true will be true? Then you will take the actions that are in alignment with that and you will make it so.
