Ryan Daniel Moran shows the math on becoming a millionaire: invest $1,500 monthly in an S&P 500 index fund and you hit $1M in about 20 years. Invest $5,000 monthly and you get there in 10 years. The faster you can grow your monthly contributions, through a business or otherwise, the sooner compounding builds real wealth.

Hi everyone. Welcome to the show. I'm Ryan Daniel Moran and I help entrepreneurs become millionaires. And today I'm going to make you one of them. I know that sounds pious, hypey and kind of arrogant, but I'm going to do it because I was doing some research for a course that I am creating that is designed to help people become millionaires. I'm walking them through my methodology of how I've helped people become millionaires, of how I've helped entrepreneurs build million dollar businesses. And I was doing some research to see what's the simplest way, what's the way that anybody could do how little money could you invest, how little time and how easy could you make it for somebody to become a millionaire. And I started running some numbers and I'm going to show you some things that I think are going to surprise you now if you're new to my work. I work with entrepreneurs. I help them build brands, get to 100 sales a day, which is a million dollar business at a $30 price point, that's a million dollar business. And then they have a multimillion dollar exit. That's my bread and butter. It's what I've been helping people do for years. I have hundreds of success stories of people who have built million dollar businesses. Now as a company at capitalism.com, we set a mission to help 1 million people become millionaires. Why? Because only 1% of people ever become millionaires. We want to change that. We want to make financial freedom the norm. Because when you have free people, you need less government. When you have people who are self reliant and responsible, you are kinder to one another. Trade makes the world more peaceful. But anyway, my mission statement is for another day. I've been helping entrepreneurs, but I want to broaden my message out to more people so that more people can become millionaires. I've written a book. It's called 12 months to 1 million. It's the playbook for building a million dollar business. It sold almost 200,000 copies, has over 1600 reviews on Amazon. My goal is to sell a million books. Cause I want to impact a million people to build million dollar businesses. But I know that only a small percentage of those people are actually going to do anything with it. So how do I break this down even further? How do I make it even simpler for people to become millionaires? Is there a simpler way for people to become millionaires than starting a million dollar business? In fact, one of the hardest things that I have to overcome when I am Helping an entrepreneur is getting them to believe that they can have a million dollar business. And I would say that one of the reasons why our trainings, and even though it's a small audience, have been very impactful for people. The reason for that is because we break down the belief into math. If you have four products that do 25 sales a day at a $30 price point, that's a million dollar business. That's $3,000 a day in sales. That's a million dollar business. So because you believe it, you can actually fill in the variable, fill in the variables and start to build the million dollar business. Well, can we make it even simpler than that? Can we bring down the belief that is necessary even more? And I think I have finally done this. After you see this, you're not going to be able to unsee this. And after you see this, it's going to be so dead simple and obvious that you can be a millionaire that you'll have absolutely no excuse. I promise you'll have no excuse. But you probably won't do it. And you probably won't do it because it's boring, because it's too simple. Just like if you wanted to lose weight, the way to lose weight is to track your calories and walk more. That's too boring for people. And so they follow random diets and they get fatter and fatter as they get older. The same is true with wealth. Money is not hard to make. In fact, I tell my 7 year old every day, remember, making money is easy. Making money is fun. Making money is good for the world. It's good for other people. When you make money, making money is not hard to do. Building wealth is not hard. In fact, Warren Buffett once said that given enough time and the right strategy, it's nearly impossible for someone not to become fabulously wealthy. Well, one, why don't we do it? We don't do it because it's too simple and we think we're smarter than everybody else. Ask me how I know. I spent millions of dollars learning that you need to keep it simple. What does that mean? It means I've lost millions of dollars 50 cents following complicated strategies when if I had just narrowed it down to the simplest way possible, my net worth would be way higher than it is today. Okay, so what you see on your screen here is an investment calculator. I love playing with the investment calculator because it allows me to just run some numbers to see how big could my net worth get? Given enough time, given enough patience, given the right strategy. How big could my net worth get if I let myself play this game for decades, which I plan to, then, you know, compounding interest is a very, very cool thing. So I just found this by searching investment calculator on the old Google. And what we're going to do here is we're going to set our target for $1 million. All right, so this is a million dollars, and we're going to start with zero. We're going to assume you got nothing, you're starting from scratch, you've got no cash to your name, all right? And we're going to put the return right here of 9.4%. Now, why did we choose that number? Because 9.4% is the average return on the S&P 500 index for the last 50 years. The last 50 years have produced 9.4% returns on average. So sometimes more, sometimes less, sometimes negative. But over time, the average has been 9.4%. Now, it's not going to be 9.44% linearly forever, but it's going to do that on average. So we're going to set that as 9.4%. If you don't trust those numbers, you can lower this if you want, or you can Google what the average S&P 500 return has been over the last 50 years. And you'll probably find that it's 9.4%. And what we're going to do here is we're just going to ask the question, what would. What would we have to contribute? What would we have to contribute on a monthly basis in order at the end of a certain period of time for it to become a million dollars? Now, I told you at the beginning of this that you probably would not do it because it was too boring, it would take too long, you would get distracted, just like losing weight is the same way. But the truth is, you. You're going to be on this planet for another 20 to 30 years at least, right? If you're watching this in your 70, you're probably still going to be around here for another 20 years. If you're watching this and you're 30, you're probably going to be on this planet for at least another 60 years because the average lifespan is going up, because modern medicine is extending our lifetimes, 100 is going to be common by the time you and I are there. So I'm 35. I've got at least, at least 50 to 60 years, at least. I think I've got longer than that. But I'm going to be around for 50 years. So I'm asking the question, how much can I leave my kids? I've got two of them. How much could I leave my kids? Like, how big could I make my net worth? Now, I used to ask the question, like, how can I make as much money as possible by the time I'm 45? And, I mean, that's a fun question to ask, but the truth is, you'll make the most money if you're planning for when you're 90, because you'll do the consistent things that Warren Buffett says lead to wealth. All right, so let's look at this. Let's say we've got a target of a million dollars and we got a 9.4% return. How long will we become a millionaire if we were to invest? What do you want to say?
Let's say $1,500 a month. Let's put this in. $1,500, the beginning of every month. Let's calculate that. It says here that you will need to invest for 19.83 years to reach your target of $1 million. 20 years. You can be a millionaire in 20 years by investing $1,500 into the S&P 500. Not by picking stocks, not by trading options, not by starting a business. Just investing $1,500 a month into the S and P.
Every month, like clockwork, like any idiot can do. Now, you might be saying, oh, but, Ryan, $1,500 a month is a lot for some people. Well, that's true. That is a lot for some people. So let's reduce this. Let's just extend the time frame. Then let's say we could do $1,000 a month.
All right, well, then we're going to be a millionaire by the time within 23.767 years. It's going to happen anyway. By the time your kids leave, you can be a millionaire if you invest $1,000 a month into the S&P 500. But, Ryan, $1,000 a month is still a lot for people. Okay, then let's lower it. Just what can we contribute every month? 500 bucks. And for $500 a month, you'll be a millionaire in less than 31 years. But I don't want to wait 30 years. No one wants to wait 30 years to be a millionaire. Of course they don't. So the question simply becomes, how can we make this number as big as possible? How can we make the monthly contribution into the s and P500 or wherever you're investing? How can we make that number as big as possible? Now, I will tell you that if you're entrepreneurial minded at all.
Then we can make those numbers go up a lot. All right, and we're going to do that next. We're going to talk about that next. But anyone in the world can make $500 a month extra that they put into the S&P 500. My goodness, that is driving for Uber for like five hours a week, four hours a week. And that's your million dollar plan. The beauty of this is that when you see that there's just a plan, like if I just put $500 away for 30 years, yeah, I don't want to wait 30 years. So hopefully that number is going to go up as I get raises and make more money and get more opportunities. I want to make that number as big as possible. But today I'm going to start just by putting $500 a month into the S&P 500. Why? Because I know that if that's all I did, then I'm going to be one of the richest 1% in the world. Take me 30 years. I don't want it to take 30 years. But at least I've got a plan. And most people don't because most people retire with nothing. But if I just put $500 a month away, I'll be a millionaire eventually. I'll eventually get to retire. Might be 75 by the time I retire, but I'll have a million dollars in the bank. That's 90 to $100,000 a year based on these numbers. That's enough for me to live a modest lifestyle in retirement, depending on what happens with inflation. But you'll have Social Security by then, too. It'll be a nice little nest egg having a million dollars. Now let's change the question. Let's say, okay, how big can we make this number? Because I don't want to wait 30 years to be a millionaire. I want to be there in a few years. Okay, well then all we need to do is change the number of the annual contribution and make it as big as possible. So let's say that we are entrepreneurial minded and we said, all right, I want to get to the goal of adding 5,000 DOL dollars a month, $5,000 a month.
Into this portfolio, which if you are, if you even try to be an entrepreneur, use like you, you should be able to make $5,000 a month extra. Like that is like the side project of side projects. That is ad revenue from a podcast that is a decent YouTube channel that is selling a couple of products. So let's just run this. Well, if you were to take $5,000 a month and invest in the S&P 500, guess what? You're a millionaire in 10 years. Not so bad. But Ryan, you wrote a book called 12 months to 1 million. Yes. If you go all in on a business, you get a million dollar business. Million dollar business in a year. Now, what are the profit margins on that, Ryan? Well, that's a really good question. Because if you built a million dollar business that sold four products at 25 sales a day at a $30 price point and you made no money, you had a zero percent profit margin. And all you did was promote affiliate products to the email list of customers. That was built from that, making no money on a million dollars in revenue. But you had a customer base and you promoted affiliate products to that email list, you would have to really suck to not make ten grand a month. That you would have to really suck. Getting 100 customers a day. That's 3000 customers a day. 3000amonth. 3000 customers a month. 3000. If you could get 3000 buyers on an email list every month, you'd have to really suck to not make an extra 120k promoting stuff to that email list. So let's say you followed my work, you built a million dollar business, you made no money. Oh, Ryan's a scam artist. I knew it. Profit margins were zero. But what I did do is I built an email list of buyers. And so Now I'm making $10,000 a month extra in my part time. And I'm going to invest that into the s and P500 at a 9.4% interest rate. Oh, my goodness. I'm a millionaire in six years. And then you know what I'm going to do? Let's do this. Well, actually, what that means is I can flip my business. I could sell my business for a few hundred thousand dollars because I got this great email list. And then I'm going to keep investing and make that nest egg even bigger. Now, here's where it gets really exciting. So let's flip this over to.
Oh, I'm revealing my hand here.
Let's flip this over to. All right, you're starting with. Let's just say you're starting with $10,000.
And we're going to put in an additional $10,000 a month at a 9.4%. What is that over, let's say 25 years. So you start a little side business you got something going, you just park it away every year. I'm not going to buy Lambos. I'm not going to put it into Bitcoin. I'm not going to flip NFTs. I'm just have a nice little side thing where I make 10k a month because I'm selling products on Amazon and I'm building an email list as a result of building that email is to marketing more things. How did I get to that customer base? I got good reviews and I posted about it on social media and I read Ryan's book and I figured out how to take it to a million. And for 25 years I'm just going to park that away. Well, guess What? That becomes $11.4 million. My goodness, these numbers are hard for me to believe. I freaking love this because this means that you just got to chip away, chip away every day, just chip away. You don't like, you don't gotta be great. You gotta have a business that spits off 10k a month.
You have more money than almost anyone. What if this was 30 years? What does this become? It was $18.6 million.
And check this out, this little graph right here. Your total contributions are only 19% of that. The rest is the growth. Almost 81% of it is just the growth. It's amazing. So much fun. What if you're young like me, you're 35. You're gonna be on this planet for at least another 50 years. If I could put 10k a month away, I'm gonna be a centimillionaire.
I'll be worth $120 million if I just bank away 10k a month. Huh? That sounds pretty fun. This makes me want to say, could I leave my kids a billion dollars? Because all I got to do is wait. It's going to take time. And this doesn't factor in like you had an exit or you had a great month. You're just chipping away. Chipping away. Chipping away with a side thing. Having your life paid for through working full time or a primary business. Take some of the profits, put them away. It's just chipping away now again, this is what got me excited about it, was seeing how much could be produced over a long period of time. But once again, if all you ever did was put away $1,000 a month, you're worth over $12 million. Given enough time. And if you don't want to wait 50 years and half the time it's still over $1 million. Putting away $1,000 a month. And if you can't come up with $1,000 a month.
You live in America.
There's a thousand ways to make $1,000 a month. You can flip stuff on ebay, you can do what Gary Vee says, and you can take stuff from the Facebook marketplace and sell it on ebay, or get it from the free postings on Craigslist, sell them on the Facebook marketplace, all kinds of ways to do that. And when you know that it's leading to a million dollar, you have the energy to do it. You know it's going somewhere. You know it's leading somewhere. How fun is this? And so our goal as entrepreneurs is to say, alright, how big can we make this additional contribution every month? How big can we make it? How much more can we throw down the chute to compound for a very long time? Because I'm much more interested in making that number as big as possible than I am showing off my fancy car on social media. I am way happier making that number go way up than impressing people with the house that I live in or the furniture that I have or the clothes I wear. I'm a dad. I'm not going to impress you with my clothes. Anyway.
That sounds fun. Making that total net worth number go up as big as possible. And you know you only need a few million bucks to have a ridiculous amount of passive income so you never have to work again. It's three or four million dollars. Three or four million bucks, which you can get consistently. Or you can build a business that you sell for 3 or 4 million bucks. That's not a terrible crazy amount. If you get a business to a million dollar revenue, you grow it for another year or two. You have a business that you can sell for three or four million dollars. It's pretty basic math. It's pretty straightforward strategy. That's why entrepreneurship is awesome. Because you can cut the the time, you can collapse time, you can take what people spend 30 years building and you can make it in four or five years, and then you can invest it and retire with a huge net worth. So it makes this game so fun. And I wanted you to see this and I wanted you to listen to this so that you can see that it's just numbers. And if you follow the plan consistently enough, you get there eventually. Eventually and inevitably you just got to do it. It's the same as just cutting calories and walking more. It's numbers. It's inevitable. Just put it away. Some months it'll go up, some months it'll Go down. You just keep putting it away. This wasn't stock picking or flipping or having a big win as an entrepreneur. This was very simply regularly depositing a small amount the most basic way possible and coming back in 50 years or 30 years or 20 years and you're a millionaire.
And so my mission is sort of adjusting here because I realize now that I can give anybody the plan to become a millionaire and then they'll say, yeah, but I don't want to wait 30 years. And I say, great, let's start a business. Let's build you an affiliate site, let's get you selling products on Amazon. Let's have you build a brand, let's have you start an agency, and let's take as much profit as possible and park it away. Yeah, well, I want to be financially free. Cool. Let's be financially free by parking as much capital as possible into a very long term investment. Yeah, but I don't want to work a job. Fine, don't work a job. You can quit your job when your business is paying for your lifestyle and producing at least an extra thousand dollars a month so that you can put it into the s and P500. That's it. That's when you can quit your job. So let's work towards that as quickly as possible. How do I get there? We need four products that sell 25 sales a day at a $30 price point. And then we have a million dollar business. Well, what are the profit margins on that? Even if you make nothing, you can just sell stuff to the list, make about 120k a year. Well, I want to live on more than that. I can't help you anymore. You're asking too many questions.
Isn't this fun to play with, making this number go up? And so now I'm looking at this going, my mission is just help as many people follow a plan as possible and then make that number that you contribute every month as big as possible by starting a business. I mean, check this out. If, when we get you to the point that you're making a million bucks a year.
I'll say $80,000 a month extra, starting with zero. We put that away for 30 years.
All right? Now you're worth well over $100 million.
And if we wait 50 years putting away a million bucks a year, you're a billionaire.
Make a million bucks a year, store it away doing nothing fancy over time, you're a billionaire.
It's made me want to ask, it's made me wonder, could I leave my kids with A billion dollars. Even if I don't, like, have some crazy win again. I sold a company for $15 million. I didn't invest it well, I didn't do this. Should have. Wish I did.
So the next time I have a 10 or a 20 or a $30 million exit, could I park that away and leave my kids with a billion dollars and put a million dollars away?
Might buy me the Cleveland Guardians. Might buy me a baseball team. Doing nothing fancy, just following the simple plan. You become a millionaire. My friends, it's basic math. It's inevitable. You have no excuse not to park away 500 to $1,000 a month for a very long time. And if you don't have it, you have no excuse to not set it as a goal to go make more money so you can park it away for a really long time and you're a millionaire. You have more money than most people will ever have. It's basic math. It's inevitable. And then you start a business to make that number go up as big as possible and you become one of the richest people in history. That's the opportunity we have. I say we do it. I'm Ryan. Daniel Marin with capitalism.com. thanks for watching. See ya. And now a quick word from Beatrice, one of our community members in the capitalism incubator.
It's very lonely being an entrepreneur. Like, I sit in my office every day and it's just me. And then I look forward to our meetings because it's actually pretty, like, entertaining. I laugh a lot, everybody makes funny comments. And then I always leave there with like an aha moment or something that it was so not obvious. They make it so they're like, how come you didn't see this? It's so obvious. I'm like, oh, my God, I can't believe it. So I think the more we talk about things and the more we hear other people going through things, it helps you sort of apply that to your business or you're able to help other people too. So it's. I like that.
Yeah.
Don't wait until tomorrow because the longer you wait, the more competition there's going to be. You're never going to get it off the ground. And there's no reason why you can't. You could either. If you don't have a product to sell, sell a core, create something, you know. So I think 100%, because what that means, it means freedom. For me, you being an entrepreneur and having your own business means freedom to do wherever you're at, from wherever you're at. And it's funny because with, with this, my told my husband, like, I want to make money while I'm sleeping. Like, that is my goal, you know. And then with the Shopify app, I don't know, you know, every time Excel comes in, you hear the little cha ching, cha ching. So I had it. He tells me that it was in the middle of the night. I had my phone, like as soon as I open, I officially opened on June 12, 2019. And then I had the phone next to my bed and I'm sleeping and then all of a sudden we hear the noise, cha ching. And then he goes on, he's like, she did it. She's making money while she's sleeping. And then he wakes me up, he's like, you just made money while you're sleeping. I'm like, yes. So many more.
