What are you. What are you doing? Working from home.
Are you?
No, I'm on Instagram.
Everybody thinks working from home is like, gonna be the greatest thing. It's not. It freaking sucks. Everybody knows it once they do it. A lot of people think that working from home means, oh, no, you're always gonna be home and it's all gonna be great and magical and there's gonna be bunny rabbits. No, the truth is when you work from home, it means you never escape work. It means work follows you everywhere you go. You can never escape it. And so you know what we do? We escape it with little distractions like, oh, that pillow's out of place. I'm gonna fix it. Actually, the pillow was just fine and I could have done it later or you know what I'll do? I'll get a snack. I'll just take a break here and I'll go pick up my kids or whatever it is. And I get it. We are trying to escape with distraction. So we're gonna outline a couple ways that you can ensure that you can still work from home, but you get things done. So to kick things off, I'm gonna show you what we do first thing in the morning. If you do nothing else, if you did nothing else with your morning routine. And we have videos that are all about building the ideal morning routine. But if you did nothing else but put this away in the morning and. And didn't check this first thing in the morning and instead replace it with this one habit of coming over, having your cup of coffee. This is what I do. I like to drink my cup of coffee, look outside and map out what is Most important for me to get done that day. Now, this is true if you are working from home or at an office or anywhere, because there's always interruptions flying at us all the time, especially when. When we're connected online, because you can always check Facebook, we can always answer an email, we can always respond to a text message. But what's the singular thing that we're getting done this day that moves the ball forward? Regardless if you're working at a coffee shop or if you are working at home or in an office, that focuses you, it keeps you on the one thing that if you get done, moves the ball forward. And without that, you will, I promise, be responding to interruptions all the time. And then you'll get to 5 o' clock and you'll say, what did I even do today? What did I even get done today? How many times have you said that? What? I sat at my computer all day. I felt like I was working. What did I actually do today? If you don't know what your primary thing is, you are lost in the sauce. Number two, have a dedicated spot in your home to work. So this is one of the offices in this house. So if I really want to focus on something, come in here, shut the door, put on headphones so that none of this is distracted. And this is important. You ready? It looks like this.
Shut out the rest of the world. Now, some of you don't have a dedicated office in your space, and it's totally fine. This is one of my homes in Austin, in the other place that I live, my other house, I don't have a dedicated office. I did, and I just rearranged to not have it anymore because I found that I didn't like it in that house specifically. Instead, where I found that I was most productive was if I just had a desk anywhere in the house. So I put it in one of the other rooms. It's one of the other bedrooms. So I've got a dedicated desk, a dedicated work area in one of the bedrooms. That is just where I come to focus, to think about work. I can still shut the door, I can still put my headphones on. But otherwise, if you are like working at the kitchen table sometimes, working on the couch sometimes, it's just harder to get into that rhythm. It is harder to have the place where you can shut off. And that's what's most important. Because if you're never able to escape work, our brains are just going all the time. We end up sabotaging because work isn't even fun anymore. Which leads me to number three, which is get the hell out. Look, we. When we don't have outside stimuli, our brains find problems to create. It's the idea that if, you know, a dog doesn't feel purpose, it digs up holes because it needs to have something to do, needs to have some problem to solve. So if you are alone or if you are not stimulated with some sort of outside movement, whether it is nature or a walk or friends or a coffee shop.
Your thoughts will destroy you and they will eat at you and they will find more problems and you'll get into conspiracy theories and you'll believe a bunch of weird things and you'll go down the rabbit hole of looking up flat earther videos on YouTube and then you're going to be one of them. I hope that never happens to you. But your thoughts will attack you if they have no other stimuli. And so we do that by getting out every day. If you want to work at a coffee shop for a while, if you want to go for a walk on a break, getting out of the house leaves the house to still be a sacred space. Because without that, all of your negative thoughts get held in that house. I don't mean that in a woo woo way. I mean your brain will associate home with. With work, stress and other negative thoughts. That's why, like, there were years in my life where I had to move like every year because I was escaping like all the negativity that brought into the house from just being attached to work there so much. The way you fix that is by focusing on the one primary thing you're going to get done. Having some sort of dedicated place, even if it is a dedicated desk in one room of the house or the apartment. And getting out every day, I mean physically getting out, not just having a video call with someone getting out. So that this place, this house, can still be a sacred space for you to decompress and disconnect. If you do those things, you'll be more productive. Let me know if you test these out. Put them in the comments of this video. Would love to hear your thoughts. By the way, I work with thousands of entrepreneurs around the world on building businesses and investing the profits.
