Curly or Wavy: Is Protein the Missing Ingredient for Your Hair?

Heather Kennett shows how to spot protein deficiency in curly or wavy hair (persistent frizz, limp curls, mushy feel) and how to treat it safely. Mix one to three teaspoons of granulated protein with 300 ml boiled water, apply to hair for about an hour, then rinse and co-wash. Over-moisturizing is safer than over-proteinizing, which makes hair brittle.

Protein. So this one is to bring the bounce back. It is in its rawest form and that's because it depends on you as to how much protein you need or an uplift that you need from your curls. When do you need to use protein? So my hair, I probably use protein on it every three months. I find I get to the point where I think what is going on with my hair doesn't matter what I do. I wash my hair and and it's going frizzy and crazy. So my advice is if you are experiencing consistent frizz between a couple of wash days, your first stop is to deep treat. So deep treat, use your treat it and mix it with your co wash. Do that a couple of times. If that is not making any difference to your hair, your hair probably needs a protein boost. The reason we recommend to use the deep treat treat it first is because if you over moisturize your hair, it's generally okay and will keep fairly balanced. If you put too much protein in your hair, your hair can be very brittle and straw like and it can damage your hair. So you need to tread carefully when using protein. The other indicators that you need a protein bounce back is when you're losing your curl. So you'll wash your hair and during the course of the day your curls are just unraveling, falling out. They're not as tight as they normally are, it feels quite mushy, like it's got no natural hold to it. They're all indicators that you need a bit of a protein boost. So as I said, try treat it once or twice first definitely to see if you have any improvement because that's a skip that a step that lots of people skip. And it's really essential in the method to keep your curls moisturized. So if that hasn't worked, let's talk about how we can use protein to get that bounce back of curls. You may have seen my posts on when I've used our protein treatment because I love it. I always get to my wit's end and think, oh, what's going on? And remember that is probably time I did a protein treatment. And once I do my curls just soak it up and they love it. I try not to do it too regularly because I've never been in the position of having a protein overload. And if I had dry brittle hair that I had to keep washing with whoops. To try and get the protein out, I think it would drive me mad. So I just tread carefully. The other reason it's granulated is because it can be used as much or as little as you want. So I tend to use three teaspoons of this mixed with 300 milliliters of boiling water. I then leave it to cool until it's lukewarm to warm. So be really careful. I don't want anyone to hurt themselves, so leave it to cool. So that's three tablespoons with 300 milliliters of water. So just in a glass jug, mix it up and then leave it to cool. Once it has cooled, you literally just pour it over your hair. There's no fanciness for it doesn't need to be mixed with anything, so just pour it over your hair, pop on your hair turban and leave it on for an hour or so. If you're not sure if you need a protein treatment, maybe use a weaker mix a teaspoon to 300 milliliters. If your hair reacts well, then do it again with slightly more. If you don't see a difference, add more protein and leave it in for longer. But all you need to do is put it over your hair and leave it on your hair. I leave it on my hair for about an hour. Your hair will obviously go a bit jelly like so when you take your plop off, your hair sort of stays up here. So you need to use fairly warm water to wash it off. Not hot because that's going to create frizz and damage, but just fairly warm water and you need to work at it. So rinsing it off, rinse it thoroughly and then co wash, leave in and those things, whichever you're choosing to use, in whichever order for your normal wash day. I'd love to see your posts about your protein bounce back and see what it looks like. But if you have any questions, just drop me a message, find me on social media and just ask away.
