Heather Kennett says beginners should nail the basic wash routine before trying advanced techniques. Start with co-washing, detangling, leave-in conditioner, and styling in soaking wet hair to form curl clumps. Skip the "shush" diffusion method, which causes frizz. Once that's solid, add other techniques like finger coiling or Denman brush styling one at a time.

My advice when you're starting the Curly Girl method is to start with the first wash, as is in the CGM club. And that's where you're co washing, detangling, putting your leave in and you're styling in in very wet hair or casting Quin Stylet or casting Quinn. You're putting it in very, very wet hair and you're trying to create those white bubbles. You're either raking your fingers through or using the wide tooth comb and shaking your head to encourage those curl clumps. You're plopping for a short while and then you're either air drying or diffusing. And do look at the diffusing video because we want to be hover diffusing. We don't want to be shushing those curls like we've all done. But that does create frizz. So do take a look at that. This now is more about the next steps. So once you've got that quick wash and go under your belt and you want to adapt that, change that, use some different methods, you might see lots of terms on social media. Raking, shake and rake, finger coiling, Den brush styling, Denman brush styling. So we're going to take you through those, but I would recommend that you start with the first wash, get that under your belt and then you can add these types of application after. So that's just my word of advice there. So check out the videos on the different product application techniques and add and try things and see how that works for you to adapt your wash day and the different wash days that you might want to have.
