Even companies trying to play fair get undercut by incumbents protecting old IP. Disney extended Mickey Mouse protection 75 years, but locking ideas away forever kills creativity. Society needs patents and trademarks, just not forever.
Why the fuck would you go in the front door? Because if you try and do the right thing by people and by customers and so on, the incumbents who are rent seekers, who just happen to have been the people who were privileged by legislation written back when information was distributed by printing press, will still try to fuck you. So why bother?
Do you believe in patents and trademarks and all that shit?
There's obviously a, there has to be a way to extract value from intellectual property and monetize it in order to incentivize the creation of intellectual property. On the other hand, It's pretty clear that extending IP for 75 years at the behest of the Disney Corporation or something is not in anyone's interests. And it's obviously everyone involved has derived the necessary amount of value from those properties at this point. And that, like many things about these different principles and values, need to be balanced in a society. And a society that's able to take, say, the property of Mickey Mouse and then recycle it after 75 years is a society that's much more dynamic and creative than one that is like, oh no, like some guy thought of this 100 years ago and now you can't touch it forever. And
