Our carbon is in Group 4 of the periodic table, So that means it has four electrons in its outer shell. Now, each hydrogen is sharing one pair of electrons, one electron from the hydrogen and one from the carbon. This gives the carbon a full octet of 8 electrons. There are four regions of negative charge density. Four regions of negative charge density adopt a tetrahedral shape. So carbon, combined with hydrogen CH4 to make methane is tetrahedral with a bond angle of 109.5 degrees.
