Episode 51: The Energy Debt You Didn’t See Coming | Dealership War Room Podcast

Chris Hunsicker argues that energy, not time or talent, determines what leaders actually produce. Energy debt builds when exhaustion erodes your capacity to lead, and he walks through daily habits to refuel and a concrete challenge: replace one draining habit with something that energizes you.

Foreign. You don't run out of time, you run out of energy. But by the time you notice it, you're already in the hole. Most dealership leaders, they're not losing because they don't care. They're losing because they're exhausted and hiding it. Dragging into meetings, snapping over little things. And that nagging fear in the back of your head, am I losing my edge? If that's you, you're not broken. You're an energy debt. And today I'm going to show you exactly how to climb back out. I'm Chris Hunsicker and this is the dealership war room. Leadership fire fueled daily, built relentlessly and delivered with hope. So let's show you exactly how to get out energy debt. Here's what nobody tells you. You can go bankrupt on energy long before you go bankrupt on time. Think of an athlete running a marathon on a sprained ankle. No matter how tough they are, they're capped. You can't grind your way out of the injury because the injury steals your potential. Hour by hour, mile by mile. And that's what it's like leading on energy debt. You can push through, but the consequences are brutal. And I know there are unbelievable examples of playing through and grinding through that kind of pain. Those of you are old enough remember Willis reed in Game 7, or Tiger woods at the US Open, or Michael Jordan in the flu game. But they stick out because they're unbelievably rare examples. We're living in the day to day trenches of dealership operation and trying to build and manufacture greatness. And the only way you're going to do that, if you find a way to maintain your energy. Because energy is your leadership skill, not time, not even talent. Energy turns potential into production. And when you're slipping into energy debt, the signs are clear. Simple tasks feel heavier. Small frustrations trigger bigger reactions. Your creative edge, your ability to see possibilities and solutions collapses. And all that's left are problems. Sound familiar? That's not weakness. That's your internal warning system built to save you screaming, refuel or crash. You would never drive with your check engine light on because you know what that could mean. Don't lead with your check energy light on. Here's the hard truth. Refueling isn't something that you hope happens over the weekend. It's a daily discipline. It's a leadership skill. Just like closing, coaching or forecasting. Every day you're either making energy deposits or you're making energy withdrawals. And most dealership leaders that I work with, I coach and Even that I see and talk to. They are spending 90% of their day making energy withdrawals and by the time they get to Thursday afternoon, they're running on fuels. Right at the moment when you need to be at your best to get you and your team ready to absolutely crush it on the weekend. That's not strategic, that's insane. Here's the critical shift. You can't wait until you're exhausted. To fix this, you need to lead yourself like an athlete does. Fuel first, then fight. Today's War room challenge. I invite you to identify one habit you know is draining your energy right now. Maybe it's grabbing your phone the second you wake up. Maybe it's skipping breakfast and not because you're intermittent fasting. Maybe it's doom scrolling before work. And maybe it's carrying emotional residue from one meeting into the next. Whatever it is, identify it and then replace it. Pick one habit that energizes you and install it immediately. A full glass of water first thing in the morning when you wake up. A five minute morning stretch right after you get out of bed. No phone until after you've gotten up, meditated and engaged with your day. Five minutes outside in the morning sunlight. I have a GM that I work with and his rule is he gets out of bed. 50 pushups. First thing to remind himself that today's the day to build your energy. One swap, one powerful win, one recharge. Because every deposit that you make in the Energy bank account is a VO for the kind of leader that you're becoming. One who finishes strong when others fade. If this hit home and you want a simple tool to track your energy deposits and your energy withdrawals, I created a tool I call the Energy Bank Worksheet. I'm just going to give it to you for free if you will. It's going to be pinned in the comments, into the YouTube section or under YouTube. In the comments, just type yes please or send it to me and I'll reply to you personally. And I will send you worksheet so you can use it to begin really dialing in your energy. So come Thursday and Friday when you need to bat your best, you will have the absolute maximum amount of energy so you can perform in an elite level. Energy is leadership fuel. Protect it, build it and spend it wisely. Remember, you are not falling behind because you're weak. You are building a stronger leadership core with leadership fire fueled daily, built relentlessly and delivered with hope. Please, if this helped today, share it with a teammate that you know is caring way more than they're showing. And let's build each other stronger. And I will see you tomorrow in the dealership war room.
