Episode 73: The Middle Zone Map | Dealership War Room Podcast

Chris Hunsicker reframes the difficult middle phase of leadership as where leaders are forged, not failing. He maps three parts: silence means no applause doesn't equal failure, pain means resistance is progress, and vision means leading without validation. Daily challenge: text someone praise, write one win from the last month, and say aloud: I'm not stuck. I'm not broken. I'm being forged.

Foreign. You're not failing. You're forging. And the resistance you feel isn't proof that you're falling behind. It's proof that you're building something that lasts. You ever feel like nothing's working? You're coaching your team, you're following process, you're fighting fires. But it feels like you're just dragging that same weight into the store. And every single morning. And then that voice shows up, that head detable that starts saying, maybe it's not worth it. Or worse yet, maybe you're not the guy or the ultimate death. Maybe I should just lower the bar. We're trying too hard. The standard's too hard. Let me say this to you loud and clear. You are not broken. You are not messed up. You are in the middle. And the middle is always messy. I'm Chris Hunsiker, and this is the dealership war room Leadership fire. Built daily, fueled intentionally, and delivered relentlessly. Today we're about to pull into the harbor of Corfu, Italy, and I want to share with you what I believe is an absolute leadership superpower. Here's the trap. You think it's not working because it doesn't feel like it's working, but you're not stuck. You're being shaped. And that silence that you hear, that's what progress sounds like before the applause starts. Because here's what all the best leaders know. Progress does not come with applause. It comes with resistance. The most dangerous phase in leadership, the middle. In the beginning, you got adrenaline. In the end, you got results. But in the middle, that's where belief starts to fade, doubt starts to creep in. That's why today I want to give you a tool, a framework that you can use for yourself and teach it forward. I call this the middle zone map. And we're going to look at three elements. Silence, pain, and vision. Number one, silence does not equal failure. The work is working even when no one is clapping. Number two, pain equals progress. Resistance is a sign you're on the edge of growth, not falling off of it. Number three, your vision has to be greater than your need for validation. You need to lead like the results are coming, even when they're not here yet. I love Phil Stutts because he describes this so beautifully when he says that none of us will ever be exonerated from pain, hard work, and uncertainty. You see, all of us believe that if our goal is big enough, if we just try hard enough, one day we're going to get to that point where we're going to be Exonerated from pain, hard work, and uncertainty. You will never be exonerated. It's your ability to lean into and embrace hard work, pain, and uncertainty that makes you leader. That gives you the very superpower I was talking about in the beginning of this video. Here's how I know you're closer than you think. Because six months ago, what felt impossible is now routine. And you've built momentum. Don't insult it by quitting now. And your future leaders are watching you and how you handle this season. This is today's war room challenge. Take three minutes before you hit the floor before the chaos starts. And I want you to do number one on. I want you to text someone something that they're doing well, catch them doing it right. Number two, I want you to write down a win that you've had in the last 30 days. And then number three, I want you to say this sentence out loud with passion and conviction. I'm not stuck. I'm not broken. I'm being forged. That is your daily anchor, your mental armor, your bamboo stick. In Sanskrit, they have a word, arambhashura, which means a hero. In the beginning, the they're caught up in all the fanfare of the start, but they fade in the middle. As soon as the hard work, the pain, the uncertainty shows up, that's when they fade. But war room leaders, you do not fade in the middle. When the middle shows up, you tighten your grip, sharpen your focus. You deepen your fire because you are not behind. You are leveling up, and you are closer than you think. So with that, let's go out and create some leadership fire, and I will see you tomorrow in the dealership War room, Sam.
