The Comparative Strategy for Accountants & Bookkeepers

In this instructional video, Mike Michalowicz, author of Profit First, explains a simple yet powerful proposal technique for accountants and bookkeepers called the "comparative" pricing strategy. He demonstrates how presenting visual elements side‑by‑side makes size or value differences instantly apparent to a prospect’s mind. Applying the same principle to pricing, he advises showing three value‑based pricing options on a single page, arranged from the highest price to the lowest. Research shows three options strike a balance: enough choice to feel autonomous but few enough to avoid overwhelm. By ordering the options descending, the prospect’s natural top‑to‑bottom, left‑to‑right (Germanic) reading flow encounters the largest number first, establishing a reference point that makes the subsequent lower prices feel more attractive. This contrasts with the common competitor approach of listing prices ascending, which can create discomfort. Implementing this comparative, descending‑order, three‑option format helps accountants and bookkeepers stand out and increase proposal win rates.
