In this short video, Christopher Ellis explains the biological makeup of tendons to clarify how glucosamine and chondroitin supplements relate to joint health. He uses a rope‑in‑gel analogy: the rope‑like collagen fibers provide tensile strength, while the surrounding gel‑like ground substance supplies flexibility, hydration, and shock absorption. The ground substance is composed of 70‑80% water and a mixture of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) such as chondroitin, proteoglycans, glycoproteins, and electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium). These components maintain osmotic balance and contribute to the functional properties of tendons and cartilage.
