Charles Hudson argues that leaving a big company needs no explanation, but joining an early-stage startup means you'll spend energy constantly explaining what the company does, your role, and why it matters. Before you go, ask yourself if you're ready for that extra work.

The last thing I will say too, is especially for folks who are leaving big companies who have never worked anywhere else. I just had this conversation with somebody. I said, there's only really one time you can leave that company. And that story is so easy to tell. Somebody of like, I've worked at McKinsey, I've worked at BCG, I've worked at JPM for the last 10 years. You don't need an explanation. Once you leave and you start going down the super, super early stage path, you have to get ready to bring people up to speed on what your company does, what your role is, what space it is. And that's different. So I would say, like, think really, really deeply about are you in interested in this role? Because it sounds great versus are you ready for what it all means.
