Dr. Mansoor Mohammed explains that humans have roughly 22,000 genes, each inherited in two copies from parents. Genes exist in different versions and constantly turn on and off throughout your life to control how your body works.

A gene is an instruction that does something in an organism. Genes come in different versions. As human beings, we inherit 2 copies of each gene, each gene being an instruction, of which there are about 22,000-odd genes in the human instructional manual. That altogether is called the human genome. For every instruction, for every gene, We inherit 2 copies of that gene, one from mom, one from dad. Genes interact with each other. The instructions from these 22,000 are genes. At any given moment in time, at any given period in your life, those genes are turned on and off and are interacting with each other to give you the ultimate what and how your body works.
