In this short video, a Yale professor introduces the Mood Meter, a science‑based social‑emotional learning (SEL) tool that maps feelings onto two dimensions: the vertical axis captures what is happening in the mind (valence), and the horizontal axis captures energy level (energized vs. depleted). Combining these axes creates four color‑coded quadrants—yellow, red, blue, and green—each representing a distinct emotional state. The professor explains that the Mood Meter is used to develop deep self‑awareness in children, and, together with complementary SEL practices, it teaches self‑regulation, co‑regulation, and perspective‑taking. He cites research (e.g., Ruhler et al.) showing that schools that implement these practices see measurable improvements in student and teacher mental health, including lower rates of depression and anxiety and overall better well‑being.
