Author Patty distills 35-40 years of corporate experience into Ordinary to Extraordinary, a guide to practical workplace habits. She argues generosity—helping colleagues with tasks that come easily to you—delivers the highest return on investment in your career, countering the survival-mode mindset most people default to.
Most deodorants only work on one part of your body. Mando pits, feet, chest, thighs, even places we don't talk about. Real freshness, real confidence.
So I love that concept, paying it forward. So Patty, let me ask you, you just released a book in June, the book that you're talking about in June of this year, Ordinary to Extraordinary. So tell us about this book and what would you like readers to gain from?
Thank you for asking that. So Ordinary to Extraordinary is my attempt to take 40 years, 35 years of corporate career life and a life, as I explained, where I got to a really nice place and boil it down, CJ, into digestible bits and things that people could really— it's not rocket science— things that people could really take and start doing tomorrow. I mentioned the network. That's one of them. The other is generosity. I believe generosity is the great superpower in the workplace. Because usually when we're in the workplace, we're in survival mode, right? We are thinking about us and only us. But I found that if I lifted my eyes up away from, you know, what I was doing and looked around to see, does my leader need some help? Is he or she struggling? Can I take some burden off? Same thing with a team member. If something comes easy to me and they're struggling with it, why don't I offer to take that from them and help? Generosity paid me back multiple. It was, it was the best ROI in my work life. And I don't think we often think about it, uh, in the workplace. So those are just a couple of the things, but the book is sprinkled with ideas like that, with advice like that.
