Should I Roth Convert In December?

Craig Wear's 16 years of research on 3,000 clients shows that timing Roth conversions throughout the year, not just at year-end, can add roughly $30,000 per $1 million converted annually. Waiting until December cuts your options and can cost $500,000 to $1 million in value.

So a lot of people think the deadline is December 31st for Roth conversions, and technically for actually getting the transaction done, it is. But boy, really, please hear this because we deal with this so often. Every month you delay is one less month that you have to coordinate all the moving pieces that have to be converted. If nothing else, we've— our research has proven that waiting until December 1st was actually— to do your conversions— was actually the worst time to do them from a rate of return and from a "how can I capture the best value for the timing of when I convert my assets" standpoint. So, just converting through the year at strategic moments gives you— our models create an extra about $30,000 per million of conversion every single year. The longer you wait, the less opportunity you have to coordinate all the pieces. And most of the people that are IRA millionaires didn't accumulate your wealth because you waited or you kicked the ball down the road. You probably accomplished what you've accomplished because you planned strategically and you took action. And unfortunately, the media has kind of lulled most people into sleep thinking that they just got to wait till December 31st. And I mean, we've done this for 16 years. We've got at this point almost 3,000 clients. We've had 15,000 different conversations about this. Throughout the years. And we just understand that there is urgency to get it done, like starting this past January. And so whatever month you're watching this in, the closer it gets to December, the more you're putting yourself in a position— you still need to do it even if you're watching this on December 15th, but you would have had so many more options had you started doing it in May or June, right?
Hey, if you're an IRA millionaire, you know what matters in doing Roth conversions isn't just how much you convert. It's also the timing of when you get— when you convert.
And there's as much as $500,000 on the table, could be even $1 million, if you don't get those details right.
And I know there's all kinds of messages all over the internet, and there's, you know, you can scroll through your socials and you get 10 financial advisors telling you to convert, not to convert, how fast, how not.
Look, the facts are just the facts, and the math is not—
