The clip is an instructional piece comparing flat collars, harnesses, slip collars, and remote training collars—how each affects pulling, appropriate uses for working dogs, safety considerations, and recommendations to consult a trainer. It also plugs CCU's full-length podcast "The Source: All Things Working Dogs" and an upcoming Army Military Working Dog Symposium.

Go! Go! Go! Good afternoon. Welcome to today's Short Set. I am Brandon, a trainer here at CCU. Today we're going to go over some basics with our flat collar versus a harness. And maybe even kind of touch on a little bit of a slip collar. So a lot of people think that when their dog starts to pull, that, oh, if I just put a harness on it, it'll stop pulling. Well, that's not exactly the case. What happens when we put these harnesses on dogs is they actually start pulling more. It actually kind of puts a dog into a working mode. A lot of times you'll see like sled dogs using harnesses, things like that, and it actually creates your dog to want to pull more. So we, we use these harnesses mainly for tracking and then some patrol work as well. Ideally, when you start having a dog that's going to start pulling on you, you kind of want to get into a flat collar. Something along these lines gives you an opportunity to get a good correction on your dog as well as maintain a little bit better control of your dog. So we've got a couple different options as far as flat collars go. We've got this style with the cobra buckle. This is actually our Modern Icon 1¾-inch flat collar. And then we also have some options with like a handle, just an agitation flat collar. Once again, just gives you a better opportunity to get a good correction on your dog. And then you can definitely get into some of these bigger flat collars. Once again, this is, this is for our working dogs. You know, a lot of those bigger dogs They'll end up breaking some of those little cheap collars with the little buckles on them. So we always recommend to our clients, especially with working dogs, to get a nice leather flat collar with the belt buckle style buckle. Moving on. So say you got a dog, he's just really pulling you all over the place. Something that we will recommend to a client who has a dog that's really pulling them all over the place, they can't get a good correction on a flat collar. Is we'll use something that's called a slip collar. We have these in stock here at CCU. It's just kind of a chain style slip collar, and this just kind of applies slight pressure up to the dog's neck and gives you a better opportunity to get a good correction on them. Another option that you can use for a collar is a remote training collar. These are not an end-all be-all. You can't just slap this on your dog and expect expect immediate results. That's not how it works. And then another kind of key point on this is it is not for a leash to be attached to. We're not attaching our leash to this. We're going to continue to use a flat collar. Your dog should already have obedience and understand what it's supposed to be doing. This is just kind of a training tool that we can use to further our dog's obedience. As always, when using some of those specialty collars, you kind of want to consult with the trainer Bring your dog in, let's evaluate and determine whether or not a slip collar is even going to be beneficial for your dog. There are some different safety concerns going into using slip collars and things like that. Thank you for joining me in today's short set. As always, if you're looking to get in for more information, come down and see us at CCU. Also, Fridays around noon, we release a full-length podcast where we talk all things working dog. That is called The Source: All Things Working Dogs. As well as, we will be at the Army's Military Working Dog Symposium coming up in the next month, so stay tuned for updates on that.
