Keely and a trainer work with Leo, a police dog in training, on concentration tracks to help him ignore distractions and stay focused on the scent trail. Leo struggles with noises and misses turns, so they deliberately create distractions during the run to build his tolerance and keep him on the intended path.
Today we're going to do some concentration tracks. We got Leo here, um, he's currently in training to be a police dog, and, uh, Keely's got a concentration set up. Uh, there's some things that she wants to work on with him.
Yep, so the main problems I've been having with him is a lot of distractions. Uh, we were out here in the field by ourselves earlier and and any noise that he heard, he would just stop in his tracks and he would just, he would just stop and stare. Um, the other thing I've been working on him is with turns. Uh, he likes to blow past those turns, so letting him figure out, you know, that odor can turn and letting him establish on those turns as well.
Okay, cool. So we're gonna run this first track, see how it goes, and then, uh, do a little bit of analysis. I'm going to sit here and I'm going to kind of try and make some noises to distract so he can work through that issue. All right, so whenever you're ready, I'll get out of your way. Ah. Step up a little that way and try and cut them into it. Just see if that odor Yeah, so concentration tracks. All right, what are they? I mean, they are, you know, it's a difficult task as this is where you're really going to have, whether you're a trainer or a handler, you're going to have your patience tested. Ultimately, that dog is not advancing towards the final goal unless he's directly on the track. All right, it's kind of like zeroing, zeroing in your rifle, right? We're trying to sharpen our tools. Not that I need that dog to perform in the real world to be on the track, directly on the track, but, um, it's going to help us get as close as possible to the track. Other than that, you know, he's still got a lot of work to do. Uh, we'll probably key you in on another session and you guys can see his progress. So as QE keeps working him, fingers crossed.
