Dogs are the same as kids? 🤔 (Here's Why)

Fixing deep dog behaviors takes months, not weeks. Like building a gym habit or raising kids, lasting change requires consistent effort from the owner, not just a trainer's intervention. Early wins are possible, but real transformation demands sustained practice over time.

You have a dog that has this behavior for X amount of time, you know, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, that's a bad behavior, but they expect a trainer to train that or fix it in a matter of 1 or 2 weeks. But I also see it on the flip side with trainers. They promise these things that have been rooted in to these dogs' behaviors for so long, and they promise that these things can be fixed. And I take back to a saying, or I go back to a saying that a friend of mine once told me: I'm not— I'm a trainer, not a musician. And I got to steal that from my friend because it makes so much sense. When we fix a dog or start changing dogs' behaviors, we can't oftentimes give a specific time frame on how long that's going to take. Because it depends on how rooted that behavior is. We talk about habits, we talk about different things that are going on that may contribute to this dog's behavior, good or bad. But think about it like going to a gym, right? Like that gym membership starts out, you're sore, you're hurt, and it takes time to start getting into the habit of working out every day. Dogs are no different. So I look at it from the same perspective as kids. Kids have been bad. It takes time to change and raise them and build them up, so to speak, over a period of time. And we often lose that perspective when it comes to dogs for some reason. I don't know why, but these miracles and these things that are expected to happen in very short periods of time, yes, we are going to have some successes very early on. But just like raising a kid, we got to have successes over a period of time in consistency, in demand, and those things that are expected through this dog's behaviors in order to get the results that we have. Oftentimes people see a well-behaved dog and they see it when it's been through months and months and months of training. And I'm not saying that the training always has to be with a trainer, That training is ongoing and consistent through the ownership of that dog as well. So if we can marry up all those things to have consistency over a period of time, the results are tremendous and remarkable. But when you just want to wave a magic wand and think— want things to change, it just doesn't happen that way. All right, I'm gonna leave you with that. Have a great day. Well, on that for a little bit.
