A tracking trainer shows how to teach dogs to follow scent uphill instead of backtracking downhill. Handler and dog Mammut demonstrate on a steep hard-surface course. Add short elevation drills to every session, even just 1% effort, to build reliable tracking.

Welcome to this week's short set. We're out with this tracking team this week, and I wanted to give you guys a little bit of perspective as we break down every element of how a dog tracks, the odor timelines, the terrain or types of terrain that we're going to be faced with on any given track. And as we break down, even through successive approximation, to teach a dog how to track and really give them the practice necessary to be a reliable tracking team, we break those things down. So today I'm going to give you guys a little bit on our short set to work on. As you see here, we're working on elevation, and we specifically target elevation so that the dog learns how to follow odor up the hill versus tracing the odor back down the hill. And we see it with new dogs all the time on an elevation change, especially ones that are as steep as you just saw. That team getting up, or that dog tracing odor halfway up that hill and then chasing, tracing it back down the hill because the odor's falling on, on the dog. So we want to teach that dog how to navigate that type of terrain, so we isolate it. And on this concentration track, this handler and his dog, Mammut, Laid a track, worked on hard surfaces, took a right turn, and directly up a steep elevation. And as you saw, the dog handled it well. So this week, break down your tracking into each and every element and work on some elevation changes. Your dog will truly be a better tracker by doing that. Investing 1% every single training session. That's it for this week's short set. Enjoy your time tracking with your dog, and again, isolate every single element and work and practice those things to be a better team every single opportunity. Have a great week. Meet me back here, this channel, this time every Tuesday for our short sets. Go!
