In this excerpt from the 2018 South Carolina K9 Workshop, the instructors explain that the program’s purpose extends beyond merely certifying participants; it aims to impart practical knowledge about working with police dogs. They note that roughly six of the eight hours each day are spent directly training with the dogs, and that about 90% of the class time is hands‑on. A trainee who had never previously interacted with dogs shares that the experience has been positive, reinforcing the workshop’s emphasis on active, experiential learning.

The reason for everything that they do is not just to get you, you know, out of here certified and out of here. They're actually trying to teach you something. We spend, I'd say, probably 6 hours out of our 8-hour day out training with the dogs and working with them.
No idea. I've never had any interactions with dogs prior to this, so my experience has been great so far.
I would say 90% of our class has been hands-on training.
