Two singers perform a folk duet: one sings a reverent verse about a Desert Rose and God's country, invoking longing and mortality. The other responds with a playful, repetitive chant begging for shoo fly pie, mixing the sacred with the comically mundane.
Desert Rose, bring our child, Desert Rose. Rest long in bedpins and in bones. Like a siren, she calls to me. Sleep comes like a drug in God's country. Sad eyes, crooked crosses in God's country.
Shoo fly pie, you gotta make me some shoo fly pie. Don't forget to sweep the last bit, I won't leave a crumb. Don't you just sit there laughing when you know how bad I need some. You know how bad I need me some of that shoo fly pie. Shoo fly pie, shoo fly pie.
