Painting business owners need to document eight core processes: recruiting and onboarding, lead generation, sales, separating service lines, customer retention, and accounting. Gino Wickman's Traction framework shows that identifying these functions is the first step to standardizing and improving performance.

Traction is a book by Gino Wickman. It is an awesome book. This book recommends basically identifying your core processes. So your core processes for a painting business might be something like HR process. So how do you recruit, interview, and bring on new workers? Your marketing process— how do you get leads, qualify leads? Sales process— how do you convince prospects to sign up for your service? Your operations process might be split into 1 to 3 processes. So maybe you do interior painting, exterior painting, and cabinets. So each of those service lines would have a process. You might have a customer retention process— how do you make that you are reactivating your customers every year and keeping them engaged and buying from you? Accounting process. Are you making sure that you're recording all the transactions and getting the information so it helps you make decisions? Those are 8 processes that will probably work for a lot of painting businesses. That's the first step. Your processes might be a little bit different, but you identify those 4 processes.
