Daniel Pink explains Joseph Campbell's concept of a bliss station: a dedicated time and place where you create without distractions. Set a 15-minute timer, put your phone in airplane mode, use earplugs, and show up regularly. Campbell believed this practice reconnects you with what matters most.
What the Sam Hill is a bliss station?
Well, Dan, so a bliss station is something that the mythologist Joseph Campbell said we all need to have. And he said it's either a special time or a special place in which we disconnect from the world so that we can connect with ourselves. Okay, so for you as an artist, do you have a bliss station? It's very fancy. It's a spot in my garage behind my house. How do we build our own bliss station? OK, well, you need 2 things. So first, you need to get out your smartphone. And second, you need some good old-fashioned earplugs. Earplugs? Ugh. And you need to make your smartphone dumb again. Put it in airplane mode, because you want to get your timer open on your phone. And set it for like 15 minutes. Everybody can find 15 minutes. Set it for 15 minutes, and then you're ready to enter your bliss.
And you have made your own bliss station. Make your smartphone a dumb phone, set the timer for 15 minutes, Stick in your earplugs and you have your own space for creative work.
