Chapters
Let's play Overrated/Underrated, the self-help edition. Bring it on.
Follow your passion.
Overrated. Terrible advice. Make a contribution to the world, not stare at your navel.
Wake up at 5 AM.
Overrated. Some people should wake up at 5 AM, other people should wake up later. You gotta follow your chronotype.
Visualize your goals.
Visualize your goals. Um, appropriately rated. I think there's some evidence that that can be helpful, but it's not a magic elixir.
Cut out all negative people.
Underrated. Oh, it's one of the smartest things that you can do is get rid of people who are jerks. They will destroy you.
You have the same 24 hours as Beyoncé.
Overrated. Like, don't worry about Beyoncé, worry about yourself.
Say affirmations every morning.
Way overrated. What you should be doing is setting out what you need to do and working really hard.
Never quit.
Completely overrated. That's actually terrible advice. There are certain situations where you do want to quit, and knowing what those situations are is incredibly important.
Fake it till you make it.
Um, probably a little bit overrated because I think it leads people to be, uh, to be a little bit false, but it's not terrible advice necessarily.
The law of attraction works.
Completely overrated. Don't believe that nonsense.
Get out of your comfort zone.
Uh, underrated. I think that one of the things that we know from how people learn and grow is that they have to find desirable difficulties, and you don't find that being comfortable.
Your network is your net worth.
Your network is your net worth. I think appropriately rated. I mean, it's a little bit glib, but, you know, the people who you work with and the people who you have connections with are a big part of what you can achieve.
Journal every morning.
You know, I would say it's appropriately rated. If that's your thing, go for it.
Discipline over motivation.
I think that concept is overrated. I think what you want to do is you want to have discipline and motivation.
Your habits shape your future.
I think that's underrated. I think that's actually a really important point. Everything we know about human performance shows that what we do regularly matters hugely rather than what we aspire— more than what we aspire to.
You become the 5 people you spend the most time with.
I think that's an underrated concept. I think there is something to that, and this is why you need to choose who you spend time with very, very intentionally, because you can end up becoming those kinds of— those people.
Cut out all negative people.
I think that's underrated. I think that getting rid of negative people, getting rid of people who are jerks, is one of the smartest things that you can do.
Read 10 pages a day.
I'm gonna say appropriately rated. I mean, go for it if that's what works for you. There's something to be said for reading regularly, so if doing— if reading 10 pages does it for you, go for it.
Get sunlight.
Underrated, because I have a vitamin D deficiency, so I need to get more sunlight.
That's it?
Okay.
