You're not special, and that's good news. Everyone screws up sometimes. The fix is treating yourself like you'd treat a friend instead of beating yourself up about it.

You're not that special. Narcissists believe they're singularly excellent, but some of these people are almost reverse narcissists, feeling like they're singularly bad. It's like, you're not that special. You're a human being who's living an experience, and at a moment, you have a scene where things went off the rails. All right, that feels terrible. I get it. Treat yourself with kindness rather than contempt. Treat yourself like you would a friend and recognize it's a moment in your life rather than the full measure of your life. And when we do that, we can begin to make sense of our regret, and we can begin to draw lessons from it.
