The Top 5 Scams in Credit Repair

In this solo podcast episode, Credit Repair Cloud founder Daniel Rosen warns credit‑repair professionals about five common fraudulent shortcuts that are illegal under federal law and explains how to replace each with a lawful, effective strategy. He opens by noting that the fastest way to lose a credit‑repair business is to adopt a “too‑good‑to‑be‑true” shortcut that actually violates statutes such as the FTC Act, the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA), and the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). He then details each scam: (1) Credit Privacy Numbers (CPNs) or synthetic profiles – illegal because they use stolen Social Security numbers and carry mandatory extra prison time; the proper approach is to pull all three credit reports, separate inaccurate from accurate items, and dispute the inaccurate ones with documentation. (2) Credit sweeps – mass filing of false identity‑theft reports, which the FTC has declared a crime; instead, use a legitimate identity‑theft report only when the client is a true victim, otherwise file factual disputes that state the error, the correct fact, and supporting proof. (3) Renting or selling tradelines – paying to be added as an authorized user on a stranger’s account, which the FTC sued as fraud and can rise to bank fraud; the lawful alternative is to build the client’s own credit through payment history, utilization reduction, secured cards, or genuine authorized‑user relationships without payment. (4) Jamming – flooding bureaus with high‑volume disputes, which can be dismissed as frivolous under the FCRA and constitute a Groh violation; the correct method is to file fewer, well‑documented disputes, keep a meticulous paper trail, and also dispute directly with furnishers or the CFPB. (5) Coaching clients to lie – advising consumers to make false statements to bureaus or lenders, prohibited by CROA 15 U.S.C. §1679; the ethical response is to refuse, explain the law, and focus on factual disputes and education. Throughout, Rosen emphasizes that honest, documented work may be slower but is sustainable, protects both the business and the client, and helps restore the industry’s reputation. The episode ends with promotional calls for the Start Repairing Credit Challenge, a free trial of Credit Repair Cloud, and a request for subscriptions and reviews.
