I am super excited to be announcing Data Framed, a weekly Data Camp podcast that explores the modern data science landscape. Data science is one of the fastest growing industries and has been called the sexiest job of the 21st century. But what exactly is data science?
Foreign.
I'm Hugo Bown Andersen, a data scientist at Data Camp, and in this podcast we'll approach this question by exploring what problems data science can solve and what it looks like in practice. From automated medical diagnosis and self driving cars to recommendation systems and climate change, come on a journey with experts from industry and academia to explore the profession that will change the course of the 21st century. Each episode of Data Framed will feature an in depth interview with a working data scientist. We're starting 2018 with a bang by launching six episodes at once. My first guest will be Hilary Mason, VP of Research at Cloudera Fast Forward Labs, a machine intelligence research company. With Hilary, I'll take a deep dive into the past, present and future of data science. We'll discuss whether data science will even exist in its current form in 10 years, or, in Hillary's words, will it go the way of the webmaster? Along the way, we'll delve into the ethics of machine learning, the challenges of AI, automation, and the role of humanity and empathy in data science. Hillary also makes clear that the challenges facing the community are large and include imprecise ethics, no standards of practice, and a lack of consistent vocabulary, all of which are a running theme in these conversations. I'll then have Chris Walensky on the show. Chris is Assistant Vice President for Big Data Research at AT&T Labs and a member of the seven person four country team that won the $1 million Netflix Prize, an open competition for improving Netflix's online recommendation system. We'll be discussing the role data science plays in the modern telecommunications network landscape, how it helps a company that services over 140 million customers on mobile, and what statistical and data scientific techniques his team uses to work with such large amounts of data. Then I'll speak with Claudia Perish, chief Scientist at Distillery, about the role of data science in the online advertising world, the predictability of humans and online bots. The following episodes will include interviews with Ben Skranker, data scientist at Convoy, a company dedicated to revolutionizing the North American trucking industry with data science Mel Salmon, who'll speak about the role of data science in epidemiology and public health and then Dave Robinson, who'll join me to speak about citizen data science and a future in which data literacy is a skill possessed by everybody. Dave specifically tackles the question of whether data science is a practice we can all take part in or a skill reserved for the few. We'll have a lot more for you each week, and this is merely a taste of the interviews that we'll be sharing with you. These interviews will be interspersed with brief segments on tales from the Open Source, Statistical Pitfalls, Data Data Science Blog Post of the Week, and Stack Overflow Diaries, to name a few. The mission of these segments is to explain and discuss in brief topics essential to any working data scientist's toolbox. I honestly can't wait to share these conversations with you. This is Dataframe.
